A reflective, almost soft look crossed Cody's face. It was so different from the usual playful smile and teasing jabs. He set down a cake at the table and grabbed a small knife, creating a smooth line along the center of it.
The moon had just risen and stars shone brightly against the ever darkening sky. Cody sat down on the ground, one hand on his lifted knee and the other lying lazily on his lap.
He leaned back against the window, his tan skin illuminating and his eyes fluttering close for some time.
When he looked back up, you almost couldn't believe it was the same Cody from before. He looked at peace. Unlike the normal energy and ever bounding joy and teasing he was normally full of, he seemed calm and down to Earth.
"I used to live in the caves with my family," he started off, his voice low. "The family wasn't too big, only my mother, father, and I. It was going fine for a while, but my parents wanted another kid. It was lonely with just me around and I was growing up. I was traveling out more often and coming back later."
You nodded, understanding that. William and Harry often commented a similar thing - that you'd grown up too fast. And while they were happy that you were more mature and independent, they wished that you were small again so they could coddle you. The thought of your family upset you, so you were grateful when Cody started talking again.
"I still remember the day like it was yesterday. We were just sitting around in a corner of our cave, talking, and there was a knock on the rock formation leading into our cave." (The 'door,' you figured, making a funny face while thinking.)
He snickered at your facial expression, momentarily going back to the old Cody. "Yep, I meant the door, as you humans like to call it," he laughed.
Then he continued, "We opened the door, kind of expecting one of our neighbors or someone like that. They would come over every now and them to complain about me and threaten to blow me up."
You shook your head at the ridiculousness of his statement, but agreed with the neighbors. You were tempted to blow him up sometimes too.
He sent you a knowing glare.
"So we opened the door expecting intense screaming or something, but instead, we saw a little girl laying in a small basket right outside. She was a human girl, just like you."
You were stunned. A little baby was left outside of a doorway, a human baby nonetheless?
"How? Why is that," you questioned.
"Hush, let me finish," He whined, his voice as childish as ever.
"Here I was, inferring that you matured," you teased slightly, trying to get your mind off of the startling news you just heard. The human baby was left at their doorstep? So, did that mean...
"Shut up," Cody continued. "Anyways, we had to take her in because it was a rule set in place by Notch. He hypothesized that there would come a day when a human child would bring peace to Minecraftia and bring everyone together - like mobs, villagers, players and stuff. A human child will be given to a being in Minecraft - any being, and they'll take care of the human child and raise them to bring peace."
You took a while to let that piece of information sink in, silently thinking about your own situation.
A slight tension formed in the room, a tension which you weren't quite sure how to handle.
"Continue your story," you requested, sitting criss cross applesauce in front of him. He nodded and continued, the tension disappearing as soon as it had come.
"Well, we named her Hope. She grew up with us and we took care of her for years, up until she became a human teenager. She was..." he cut himself off by laying back and staring outside at the night sky through the window, the stars lighting up his calm eyes.
