THE NEXT MORNING, JADE was very quickly awoken by her little brother jumping on her bed. she groaned and stuffed her head into her pillow for a moment before finally deciding to give in and get up. she told her brother to leave and that she would be down in a second before rolling over to grab her phone. it was 7:37, just about the time she assumed aiden would be waking her up at. she decided not to change, and just stayed in her pajamas. it was just her family, so she really didn't mind. she felt her phone buzz in her pocket, and checked it to see that her mom was asking her to come down so her brother would calm down. she complied, and quickly ran downstairs.

after opening up their gifts, aiden obviously getting the most, and jade and ana mostly just getting cash and small things, they ate breakfast together. it was the same as it was every year, eggs, pancakes, and sausage. during breakfast, jade's parents told them things her and her sister did as kids during the holidays. they finished pretty quickly, and jade helped her mom with the dishes like she did most years.

when they were done cleaning up, jade's dad mentioned playing monopoly, which of course everyone groaned at, but went along with anyway. about half an hour into playing, jade felt her phone buzz under her leg.

jade left him on read, since it was coming up to be her turn. she silenced her phone, and didn't think about it again until after the game was done, when her and her family were sitting in front of the yule log and watching her brother play with his new toys. she opened up her phone to check the time and saw she had missed some messages from earlier.
