WHILE JADE WAS WORKING, clay went to the target that was near his house and got things for the night ahead of them. he got a large blanket and snacks, packing them all in his backseat. he went home and fed patches, and before he knew it, it was time to pick her up. when he got there, he was a few minutes early, so he sat in his car scrolling through twitter, occasionally looking up to see jade closing up the store. finally after about ten minutes, she walked out of the store, clay running around to open her door like always.
"how was it?" he had asked her after he sat down in the drivers seat and restarted the engine.
"it was fine, same as always. i did meet a cute like, four year old boy though. he went on a whole thing about why this one candle was his favorite," clay laughed, being reminded of how the two of them had met. the rest of the drive stayed a comfortable silence.
"okay, go in, change, do whatever, i'll be back in ten," he had said when they pulled up to her building. jade looked a little confused, but nodded anyway. she went upstairs, greeting her cat who was sitting on the chair in her entryway, and changed into a big sweater and leggings. she sat on her couch for a moment before getting a text from clay that he was there.
"where'd you go?" she asked him when she sat back down in his car. he gestured to the center console, where two large baja blasts were sat. jade smiled at him, and he reached his hand across to grab her hand. the two sat quietly, listening to the music that was playing quietly over the radio. the drive was somewhat long, the both of them pointing things out or making jokes along the way. when they finally got there, clay jumped out, opening jades door, and walked around to his trunk to grab the things he had bought. jade was confused, but she trusted him enough not to worry about it. she was excited.
"you ready?" he had asked her, holding everything in one hand, offering out his other. jade nodded, taking it.
they took a short walk along a pathway, finally ending up under an empty pavilion. clay placed the blanket down first, followed by the assortment of snacks. he sat down first, grabbing jade's hand and pulling her down with him.
"this is pretty," jade told him, looking around, resembling a kid in a candy store. clay hummed, pulling her closer to him. jade adjusted herself so that she was facing him, while staying just as close.
"i used to come here all the time with my friends. i remember one time i tripped and fell into that pole over there and had to get like 12 stitches or something," clay told her, pointing to a large concrete pillar.
"12 stitches? is that what that is?" she questioned, running her thumb over the slit in his eyebrow. clay nodded, slightly leaning into her touch.
the two sat looking around, cuddled together on the blanket for what felt like hours before clay checked his phone, noticing it was almost 11.
"did you wanna go back to my place? we can always go back to yours too if you want," he suggested, moving to face her again.
"let's go back to yours, it's cold out here and i wanna steal that sweatshirt of yours," clay laughed and agreed, and they packed up and walked back to his car. jade helped him put things in the trunk, clay finally closing it and facing her. jade smiled up to him staring and cocked her head. "what?"
he stared at her for a moment, before quickly moving his head forward and kissing her softly. she was shocked for a moment, causing him to pull away. "i'm sorry i-" he tried to say, before jade pulled him back in. when they pulled away, they smiled at each other for a moment before clay grabbed her hand and walked her to the passenger side and opened the door. he got into the drivers side, and this time, instead of holding her hand, he placed his gently on her knee.
jade kept her face down for a majority of the ride, trying to hide her smile. clay was wearing the same expression proudly, looking over to her every once in a while. when they got home, they did the same routine as always, walking up to his apartment.
"i'm tired," jade told him, yawning and stretching her arms.
"go lay down, i'll be there in a minute," he replied, letting go of her hand and walking over to the bathroom. jade cuddled up in his sheets, patches coming over and licking her. she pet her for a little bit before clay came back shirtless with his hoodie in hand. jade sat up quickly, grabbing it out of his hands and slipping it on. he laughed at her, sliding on a t-shirt and getting into bed next to her. she layed back down, clay wrapping his arms around her. he lightly kissed her on the forehead, making her let out a small laugh.
"goodnight, clay"
"goodnight, jade."
