They didn't see the two riders for the rest of the day, something that disappointed Lucy very much. Still, they got on with their unpacking. As much as Lucy wanted to properly meet them, she knew she would just have to wait.
However the two turned up sooner than expected. It was shortly before six, and the four Pevensies had settled themselves into the lounge, enjoying the warm afternoon sun. Lucy was gazing over the garden through the large window, watching the trees sway in the wind, when she heard laughter. The heads of the four snapped towards the door in almost perfect time, as one voice laughed and said, "Maybe I'm always late, but at least I'm not slow!"
"Hey!" A slightly deeper voice cried in mock offense. "I'm not that slow! Name one time you had to stop and wait for me today!"
"Okay, hold on, let me just write a novel real quick." The boy grumbled something they couldn't hear.
"Seriously, I could list at least a hundred times you've-"
"Yeah, okay!" The door swung open. "I get it!" The boys eyes widened only the tiniest bit when he noticed the children.
"Hey!" He smiled. "You must be the city kids! I'm Noah." He had messy tawny brown hair, windswept and curly.
"Lucy!" The youngest jumped off the armchair and ran up to shake his hand.
"It's nice to meet you." He glanced behind him. "Hey! Eve! Come in here!"A girl entered the room behind Noah. She had earth brown hair that tumbled in ringlets down to just past her shoulders, and wide, chocolate colored eyes. He had no idea why, but when she entered the room, Peters heart dropped, just a little.
She bit her lip and waved at them.
"Guys, I'd like you to meet my...socially challenged sister."
The girl socked him on the arm, making him cry out pathetically. This sent them both into a laughing fit, which confused Lucy. What was funny about being hurt?
"Are you okay?" She gazed up at him.
"He's fine, just a bit of a wimp." The girl smirked. It was the first thing she'd said to them.
"Hi! I'm Lucy!" She stuck out her hand. Evelyn was taken aback. She'd known this girl for, what, five seconds? Why was she being so friendly?
"I-I'm, um, Evelyn..." She frowned as she shook Lucy's hand. Lucy beamed.
"This is Susan, Peter, and the one under the chair is Edmund." Everyone turned to Edmund, who ignored them all, but Peter caught Evelyn making a shocked, disbelieving face at Noah. Peter noticed that she never once looked at anyone other than Lucy and Noah. Why? He frowned. He did not have much time to wonder about it, as a loud clanging noise echoed through the house. The four children scrambled up, startled.
"Relax." Noah smiled. "It's just the dinner bell."
"Oh." Lucy sighed.
"Well, we should hurry!" Susan looked slightly nervous. "We don't want to get on the wrong side of The Macready so soon. Mother said we have to make a good impression." Evelyn couldn't stop herself from letting out a snort of laughter. Realising she was being rue, she turned away to try and hide her shaking shoulders, but after she made eye contact with Noah, it was pointless as both began giggling continuously
"What?" Susan frowned, puzzled.
"Nothing - it's just -" Noah managed to say in between giggles.
"It's Mrs Macready!" Evelyn laughed. "You're gonna end up on her bad side whether you want to or not!"
"She'd know." Noah smirked. "She gave up behaving around the witch a long time ago."
"The who?" Peter asked.
"Oh, it's our nickname for her, y'know, cause she's such an evil old hag."
"What do you mean?" Susan frowned, thinking it was quite rude.
"Okay, I know how rude it sounds," Evelyn began. "but it's true! I haven't been able to have a single conversation with her since I was five because all she cares about is me becoming a prim and proper young lady! I mean, who cares if I wear pants and ride a horse?"
"I haven't had many bad experiences with Mrs Macready, but she's always having a go at Evie." Noah explained. "You might get to see if you stick around long enough."
"She does seem awfully strict." Peter frowned
"Oh, we stopped caring about her rules a long times ago." Noah smiled. "You should too. You'll have a lot more f-" she was cut off by the loud clanging of the dinner bell once again.
"Okay, we should really go have dinner now." Susan smiled. "Are you two going to come?"
"Oh, nah. We've already ate." Noah smiled.
"Okay, well, it's been nice to meet you." She smiled. "Maybe we'll see you tomorrow?"
"Maybe." Evelyn shrugged.
