The world was calm. Too calm. Like it was asleep. Like it was dead.

It was the calm before the storm.

Narnia felt it. The trees felt it. The sky felt it. The earth felt it. The air felt it. The sea felt it.

Evelyn felt it.

She sat there, just as still as the lands spread out below her, feeling the wind slowly pick up around her. The calmness in her was strange. For the first time in her life, her mind was empty. Nothing went through it. Not a single thought.

Her eyes were closed, the only movement the rise and fall of her chest. Her legs dangled off the edge of the cliff.

Aslan's death, though she knew it was coming, and that it was temporary, hit her like a speeding bus.

But as the wind picked up, ruffling the leaves on the trees and stirring the ocean, so did she.

Emotion slowly filtered back through her heart. Thoughts drifted through her mind at tortoise pace.

Aslan was gone.

She killed him.

It wasn't going to stay this way for long. Soon, Aslan would rise again, Evelyn knew. But there was a part of her that hoped there was still some good in her mother. That she would see the error of her ways, and stop. That Aslan would come home, surrounded by the minotaur and dwarves. That she wouldn't have to do what she knew she must. She hoped this even after she was taken. Even after her mother locked her up for weeks, tortured her. She hoped for a truce, a free Narnia without the blood and death.

But that didn't happen.

Her mother was just as ruthless as they all said. She was a killer.

As she sun began to float over the horizon, Evelyn stood, knowing that, any time now, Peter would hear of the news. She must get back to camp.

--

The early morning sunlight bounced off the silver sword, drawn quickly at the intruder. She was pink, made of fresh cherry blossoms.

"Be still, my princes." she began. "I bring grave news from your sisters."

--

Peter emerged from Aslan's tent, looking crushed.

"She's right." He spoke. "He's gone."

"Then you'll have to lead us." Ed stood tall, one hand on his sword as he tried to keep calm. "Peter, there's an army out there and it's ready to follow you."

"I can't." Peter's voice broke.

"Aslan believed you could." Ed began.

"And so do I." A new voice spoke from behind him. Evelyn stood there, ruby coloured dress rustling in the breeze. Her eyes were slightly red, she looked like she'd been crying. But the look on her face was determined.

"Evelyn..."

"Me too." Ed smiled at his older brother.

"The witch's army is nearing, sire." Orieus' eyes glinted knowingly. "What are your orders?"

Evelyn walked up beside him, taking his hand and squeezing it softly. In that moment, Peter felt he could do anything.

--

Thoughts raced through Evelyn's mind, rushing like a river. This battle was different for her. Behind her, the Narnian's eyes were full of hope, or worry. Excitement, for they would finally get the chance to win this hundred year war. But all Evelyn could feel was sadness.
