Tangled Life Chapter 9 - mini chapter
[A Different POV]
"Why are you doing this?" asked Mary, as she and Sebastian got into Sebastian's car.
"I want to give you a ride home so you won't have to commute back," said Sebastian nonchalantly as he starts the car.
"I meant, why act as if nothing happened?" said Mary, her hands curling up into a ball on her lap.
Sebastian took his time before he replied, his eyes fixed straight to the road. When they where at the highway, he rubbed his neck, sighed and said, "I want to make it up to you. I'm sorry."
Mary rolled her eyes and said, "You've apologized before."
"But you haven't accepted it," said Sebastian glancing at Mary. "Please, let's just go back to the things we were before. I'm sorry for hurting your feelings, I didn't mean to do that."
"It's not easy to go back to how things were," Mary snapped. "I know you didn't mean to hurt my feelings." She grumbled at the end.
"I don't want to waste the friendship we have," said Sebastian. "Please, I'll do anything you want. Just forgive me."
Mary didn't say anything else and so the whole car ride to her house was quiet from then on. When they arrived, Sebastian stopped the car in front of her house without turning off the engine.
"I'll wait here," he said.
Mary didn't spare him a glance and went out of the car, slamming the door slightly as she went out and jogged up the steps to her house, noisily closing the door behind her as well.
Sebastian sighed and placed his head between his hands as he leaned to the steering wheel, gripping it tight as if it will somewhat make him relax a little. He didn't have to wait long, Mary went out of the house wearing sweats with a gym bag slung on her shoulders.
When Mary was finally settled once again beside him, he asked, "Anywhere else you need to go?"
"None," said Mary, not even bothering to look at him.
Sebastian sighed and started to drive the car again, glancing every now and then to Mary. When they were halfway back to the hospital, Sebastian decided to stop the car at the side of street and faced Mary.
"I can't take this anymore!" he said. "Tell me anything and I'll do it. Just please forgive me, let's stop this nonsense already. It's not just us that are suffering but our friends as well."
Mary crossed her arms on her chest and looked at Sebastian angrily, her eyes brimming with tears, "Do you think I like this? Do you think I don't know that our friends are suffering as well? It's not that easy ok! It's not like we can go back to whatever we were before and act as if nothing happened the moment I forgive you. I fucking love you that it hurts so much!"
Sebastian reached out a hand to Mary to comfort her and said, "It's going to be-"
Mary smacked his hands and shouted, "Don't give me that shit, it's not going to be ok! I feel so ashamed. It thought you love me too but I was wrong."
Sebastian stayed silent not knowing what to do.
Mary tried to wipe the tears from her eyes but failed miserably since tears still kept on falling. "You know what the worst part is? It's not about you not loving me but me knowing the person you love! Yes I asked you who it was but shit, I never knew it could hurt this bad! Why her?!"
"I'm sorry," said Sebastian in whisper since it's all he could say. "I didn't mean to hurt you nor give you any mixed signals. I'm sorry, Mary."
Mary drew a ragged breath and hugged herself, trying to calm down. She shook her head as silent tears stream down her face. She have never felt this broken in her entire life, she knew that it wasn't Sebastian's fault but is seemed easier to blame somebody else than blame herself.
A couple of minutes passed and she felt strong and warm arms enclosed her body into a hug, Mary didn't shove off Sebastian this time but instead let him rock her back and forth as he mutters apologies and comforting words to her.
When she finally stopped crying, Mary looked up to Sebastian's eyes, as if looking for something or somehow trying to understand. Sebastian could see in her eyes questions that he couldn't answer, questions that he knew Mary has been dying to know.
"Would you really do anything?" asked Mary, not letting her eyes leave Sebastian's.
From the look Mary was giving him, he knew that she is asking for something that he will not like. He searched her eyes to see if she was serious, he could not find a hint of dishonesty in her eyes. He was then and there, at that moment, certain that this was the big payback Mary has for him, the sudden change she did has led to this, for breaking her heart. She knew he couldn't say no, Mary has something up against him that he couldn't risk losing and that is the girl he loves.
"I," he said, not knowing what to say.
"Please?" whispered Mary, slowly inclining her head towards Sebastian's. "You said you would do anything."
Sebastian had said he would but he hadn't expected this from Mary. He thought she was better than this but sadly he read her wrong, like how she had read wrong his feelings for her. Mary's eyes were pleading but challenging him at the same time, her face was now so close to his that he could see clearly the different strands of her eyelashes and the tears that clings to it.
"Are you sure this is what you want?" asked Sebastian.
Mary gave a small nod and said nothing else, watching the different emotions flicker by in Sebastian's eyes. Confusion, anger, hurt, hesitance and her favorite: regret.
This was clearly a trap but he couldn't back down and say no, Sebastian gave an audible gulp and ever so slowly nodded his head in acceptance, making Mary's eyes glint in triumph. Smirking, Mary closed the gap between their mouth and kissed Sebastian's lips sealing in the deal.
