Chapter 6- Tangled Life

David looked at me with his pleading grey eyes, waiting for me to answer him. I couldn't get a word out of my mouth, my thoughts were jumbled and I couldn't concentrate on a single one.

I tried to open my mouth but still no words came so I closed it once more and weighed in the pros and cons of the situation. The cons are: A. I'm not entirely sure of what he is up to or if he really is telling the truth, B. we still have a deal and this might be a tactic of his to make me fall for him, and C. The friendship, no matter how little it is between us, might be at risk. The pros, on the other hand, are: A. He is the first one to ask about what I have always wanted people to ask me about, B. He is willing to be what I have always dreamed of someone to take down my walls, and C. He likes me, or so he says he does.

I opened my mouth again and started to say, "I..."

"NO!"

David’s eyes grew wide with confusion and surprise, and so were mine. Did I just say that? I thought, I couldn't, I haven't said anything yet but the word 'I.' It took us both a while before we could comprehend that the voice who shouted 'No!' was from a male, so we briskly turned our heads around us to see whose voice it was only to find out that it was Seb.

What?! I thought. Seb is against this? But then I realized that he was half sitted and half standing with his hand outstretched in front of him when we saw him but he doesn't seem to notice us. His attention was focused on the retreating figure walking fast away from him, Mary.

"What the-?" said David who seemed to be confused as I was.

It wasn't about us but who was that? Is that Mary? I thought. Suddenly realizing that it is her, I snatched my hand away from David's grasp and stood up straightaway to follow Mary to where she was going. I ducked a few tables and people as I walked briskly to catch up to her before I lose sight of her. When there were no more tables on my way, I broke into a run with my eyes fixed on Mary's back.

"Mary!" I shouted, trying to get her attention. "Mary, wait up!" but she doesn't seem to hear my voice. When I was only a meter away from her, I pushed myself a notch further to ran faster and grab hold of her arm.

Mary was startled when I got hold of her so she quickly turned to see who it was. I saw tears streaming down her face and how red her eyes were.

"Mary, I-" I started to say but haven't had the time to finish it when she engulfed me into a tight embrace, her whole body trembling as I wrap my arms around her.

"What happened?" I whispered to her ear, not giving a damn about the people who were now watching us.

Mary just shook her head and cried harder, making her whole body tremble even more. I couldn't think of anything that Seb could have said to make her react this way. I may not know what the reason was and whose fault it was but irritation filled my body as I see Mary act this way, I never wanted to see my friends like this.

It took Mary a couple of minutes to calm down. She looked at me and said, "Please take me home," with a small voice like that of a child.

I just nodded and held her hand as I led her out of the Mall. Once outside, I asked her where she parked her car and she just pointed out the direction. When we reached her red convertible, I asked for the keys as she is in no state to drive us home, so she just handed it to me and climbed in the passenger sit. All throughout the ride to her house, Mary was quietly sniffling beside me, holding a wet and crumpled white handkerchief that I gave her earlier.

We reached our destination after twenty minutes with nothing but silence and a dozen of missed calls on both of our phones. All three of our friends kept calling us but all stopped after sometime when they realize that we wouldn't answer their calls.
