Chapter 14

Eggs don't like being tossed around. I learnt that the hard way. Duncan should know better than to put me in charge. I scowled at the sight of the crack running across the egg. Skylar looked guilty, "Uh-oh."

I picked up the egg and examined it. There was no creamy charmander yolk oozing from it so I deemed it okay. I stuffed it quickly into the satchel and picked up Skylar.

"Let's go tell mommy the egg's hatching," I cooed. She nodded excitedly.

Duncan had been going to those stupid bird meetings for almost a week now. Those first few days he used to take the egg and come back in a group. Lately he's been leaving the egg and returning way later than usual with Sport. If I were the jealous type, I'd demand to know what's going on, but I'm not, so I didn't.

He was actually due back in the next hour so I figured he wouldn't mind if Skylar and I waited for him to finish up.

I popped Skylar in her pram which is always downstairs now. I'm building her a crib upstairs but I procrastinate so it's taking a while.

I pulled up her hoodie, my own hoodie and the hoodie for the little egg. Casey's been taking her role as aunt a lot more seriously now. She knitted the egg a hoodie and a sock to keep it warm and now she's working on charmander sized clothes for when it hatches.

"Lil sis, heading out!" I called before I left.

"Kaykay!" she yelled back.

We left. The rain was more of a foggy drizzle so we walked leisurely. Skylar kept wanting to eat the raindrops. To keep her busy, I handed her the satchel with her baby brother and told her to talk to him. She did. She told him about me and Duncan and about the house. She knows a lot more than we give her credit for. Then she started talking about everything she was looking at now. It was adorable. I was making a video on my phone to upload to my laptop later.

We bought hot chocolate and nuts, fed squirrels some nuts and took lots of pictures on our way to the aviary club. By the time we reached it, an hour was up and the members were leaving.

Many waved and greeted us. I waited patiently with the pram. Skylar waved and greeted back. The egg was popped back into the satchel.

There was no Duncan. The last person was locking up and still no Duncan. Or Sport. I frowned.

"Hey, where's Duncan?" I asked the person. He looked at me nervously and pushed his glasses higher.

"He's not here."

"I can see that. I wanna know where he went."

"I dunno."

"Didn't he tell you?"

"He didn't come."

"Oh..."

"He hasn't been coming for quite a while now...neither has William."

"Will-who?"

"William. I believe you call him Sport."

"Ohh."

"Can I leave now?"

"Yeah."

The man hurried away. I looked at Skylar. She was clutching the satchel tightly. She glanced up at me.

"Well, let's go wait for mommy at home," I said with a fake smile. Skylar nodded.

I pushed the pram homeward. I guess I am jealous because I realized I was walking back to my place via the way you get to Sport's house.
