Chapter 8 - Lies

You woke up late this morning since that message you received made you restless. Luckily, you usually go to school earlier so you weren't actually THAT late. On the way to your classroom, Hamada was coincidentally heading there too.

"What a surprise, Y/N is late to lesson." he says. You remember what Yamaguchi told you and you figured this was an opportunity to confront him.

"Listen Hamada-kun, after we finish the project, I can't speak to you anymore. You bullied one of my dearest friends." you tell him whilst walking and avoiding eye contact. He abruptly stops and grabs your arm.

"Who's your friend?" he asks. He tightens his grip on your arm.

"Please let me go." you whisper, trying not to make a scene.

"Oh, sorry." He lets go of your arm and steps back. "I don't know what you were told but I can assure you they're lying."

"How can you assure me? Do you expect me to believe you over my best friend?" you're starting to raise your voice.

"I don't know why they would lie to you but I promise they are! I may be a slacking student who gets in trouble now and then but I would never hurt someone without good reason!"

You pause for a second. This is the most genuine he's ever been but you don't understand why. Why is he trying to prove himself to you? Does he really want to be your friend that bad?

"I'll speak to my friend but if they insist on it being true then I'm sorry, we just can't be friends." you suggested, in which he nodded to. Deep down you wish that Yamaguchi is lying, even though Hamada is a little bit of a pain, the idea of being friends with him wasn't so bad.

The rest of the journey to the classroom was silent between you two. Once you got there you spotted Tsukishima glaring you and Hamada down. You got your scolding from the teacher and you sat down. Great, you'll be late to volleyball club too since you just got your first detention. Thank god it's a home game with Nekoma.

When the lesson ended you turned around to Tsukishima to pass time talking until your next teacher came.

"Were you so busy making out with Hamada that you were late to lesson?" he snarkily says. You couldn't tell if he was being his usual sarcastic self or if he's actually serious.

"No, I overslept and he happened to come in late too." you answer seriously, just in case.

"Hm." Tsukishima turns away from you.

"What?" you couldn't understand why Tsukishima is being like this.

"Nothing. You and him make a great couple."

Clearly sarcasm.

"Oh is that why you kissed me then?" you smirk. His face instantly turns red.

"Shut up." he yaps. It's so funny teasing the person who teases you.

*Skip to lunch*

You tap Yamaguchi on the shoulder while in the line for lunch.

"Yes Y/N?"

"About Hamada, are you sure it was him who bullied you?" you ask. "I confronted him but he swore it wasn't him." After you said this Yamaguchi seemed really nervous and stopped making eye contact with you.

"Erm... Y-yeah I'm s-sure of it" he stutters.

"You don't seem so sure."

"Erm..." he hesitates.

"Yamaguchi if you lied I promise I won't be mad, please just tell me." you insisted.

"Well... please don't tell him but Tsukishima told me to tell you that. Please don't tell him I told you, I'm sorry for lying to you." he begged.

Poor Yamaguchi, he looks like he's going to cry. Ugh. That damn Tsukishima.

"I can't let this go. I have to talk to him about this but I will make sure he doesn't say anything to you, Okay?" you hold his shoulder.

"F-fine... he's gonna be so mad at me." he worries.

"He made you lie to me, don't worry, he's in the wrong." you smile to comfort him.

The lesson after lunch you decided to not make a scene in the classroom and get another detention so you waited until practice to confront Tsukishima. You're not the type to do all this confronting shit but it pissed you off that that blondie is trying to ruin your friendship with Hamada. You're starting to think he's jealous.

After detention, Hamada walked you to the gym hall.

"Hey Yudai-kun, I'm sorry for earlier. My friend was told to lie by someone else. Turns out you're innocent." you slightly laugh and look at him.

With a surprised look on his face he says, "You said my first name." you grin at him and he softly smiles.

You reached the hall and you wave him goodbye. From the small gap between the doors you see that Nekoma was already here.
Okay Y/N, you can do this.

Just like the first time you entered this hall, you tried to open the door as little as possible to attract the least attention you can. However, this time your cover was blown by Hinata this time, not Tanaka.

"Y/N-chan! What took you so long?!" he shouts. "Nevermind that, meet Kenma-kun!" you pushes the boy in front of you.

"Nice to meet you." you softly smile to him.

"Yeah." Kenma looks down.

"Hinata, have you seen Tsukishima?" you ask.

"Yeah he's in the storage room getting the equipment."

"Okay thanks." you walk towards the small room and indeed he was there. Before closing the door, you look around to make sure no one thinks anything absurd.

"Tsukishima."

"Y/N?" he notices you shut the door and he becomes visibly confused.

"Why did you make Yamaguchi lie to me?"

"He told you." he sighs. "I knew he would give in to you."

"Don't blame him for this, he did the right thing. I just wanna know why you would make him lie? And then you kiss me after? If this was your plan to get with me then it didn't work."

"Y/N I'm sorry-"

"No, you're only sorry because you were caught. Yamaguchi didn't deserve this, neither did Hamada." you interrupt him.

"Hamada doesn't deserve you." he mutters.

"Who are you to decide who deserves me?"

"So you like him?"

"I didn't say that." you shout. You were clearly getting more frustrated with him.

"Y/N-"

"If you do like me you wouldn't ruin my friendships, I've spent so long not having any and I'm not letting you ruin this for me!" your eyes start to get watery.

"Woah it's getting heated in here." an unknown voice says.

You look to your left and realise an unfamiliar, tall boy with his black hair covering his eye and Kageyama were watching. You were so angry that you didn't realise that someone opened the door.

"Erm, sorry about that." you timidly laugh, feeling embarassed as hell right now.

"Y/N are you okay? I'll talk to you later if you want." Kageyama kindly walks you out the storage room.

"How much of that conversation did you hear?" you whisper to him.

"We walked in when you shouted 'I didn't say that.'" he tried to impersonate you which made you giggle. You stop laughing realising the two now know that Tsukishima likes you. And that you had no friends in middle school.

"Kags, can you keep what I said to Tsukishima a secret?"

"Of course."
