The afternoon passed by in a blur and although the blazing sun remained shrouded, its golden beams of light bounced upon the velvety skin of the clouds. Twilight pulled drapes across the sky as shades of amethyst, coral and rouge weaved through the air, with hints of ultramarine bleeding through, creating an incandescent harmony as the hues frolicked around like bambinos.
Time had flown with such velocity that Aaradhya and Nidhi had never even realised when their empty hands started holding the weight of bags filled with Diwali goodies from diyas to an array of rangoli powders, not to forget, a melange of delectables like Kaju Katlis, Ladoos, Barfis, Sandesh, Modak and what not. (uff, now my mouth is watering)
The old mahogany grandfather clock chimed 6 pm and just as the girls plopped down on the bed, Anupama aunty and Sammy burst into the room with clearly contrasting expressions; One with absolute joy and excitement and the other with pure disappointment and exhaustion. . .
Now whose expressions those were, you, the reader, can guess very well.
"Haii Bhagoban!! You guys are still not ready?" Aunty's hand shot up to rest on her hip as she looked at the girls sternly.
Nidhi whined, "Maa, we just came! We'll go get ready, we have sooooo much time left!"
"Baje kotha bolbe naa! All of you go get ready now, sighri!" This earned a giggle from Samaira as Aaradhya and Nidhi sat up straight; Aaradhya's face painted in amusement while Nidhi's face contorted in a frown. Anupama aunty always tended to speak in a farrago of Bengali and English which seems to support her catchphrase, "Ekta bhasha jothestho noy" which literally means 'One language is never enough' (I totally agree with that)
With that, Anupama aunty stormed off as Nidhi shot up and nudged Sammy to get ready.
"Go, wear your outfit quickly and come."
While Sammy dressed and Nidhi rushed around to get some things ready, Aaradhya couldn't help but wonder, Sammy knows what she's gonna wear. . .Nidhi has her outfit ready. . .What in the world am I going to wear? Should I just wear a kurti— No no! Shaurya will murder me if I wear something simple. . .Uff, Why is Nidhi taking so much time to show me my outfit?
"Lo, I'm ready! Now please do something about the chidiya ka ghosla on my head," Samaira's perked up voice pried Aaradhya from her thoughts as she took in Samaira's appearance.
"Sammy, khoob fatafati lagche!" Her broken Bengali burst out only to be greeted by Nidhi and Sammy's snickers.
Minutes filled with laughter passed by until it died down as Nidhi clutched her stomach and wheezed, "Aaru, our Bengali genes have rubbed on you! Now you are a true Bengali sherni!"
Aaradhya beamed and soon Nidhi started brushing the little girl's hair and pinning the front locks back as Aaradhya applied a faint blush tint on her plump lips and a slight blush on the apples of her cheeks.
