You let out a worried sigh, quickly scurrying through the halls of the Death Weapon Meister Academy. You had overslept and missed the start of class. Professor Stein was going to have your head for this. You frowned, quickly making your way to the classroom.
Pushing open the door, you swiftly headed to your seat, dropping yourself into it with a loud sigh. This wouldn't be your first time being late to class, but you always felt a little disappointed in yourself when you were late.
Something was a bit off about the classroom, however. You looked around the room, noticing the absence of a few of your classmates. Maka, Soul, Kid, Patty, Liz, and most importantly Black Star and Tsubaki were nowhere to be found. Upon further inspection, you noticed Professor Stein wasn't in the room either. You mentally hit yourself for not noticing such important details earlier.
Leaning against the table, you called out to a few of your classmates a few rows down. "Hey, where's everyone gone off to? Class wasn't canceled today, was it?"
One of your classmates frowned in pity. "Haven't you heard the news? Black Star and Tsubaki took on the mission of the Enchanted Sword."
"Maka and the others went to talk to Lord Death about it," another chimed in, nodding. "Professor Stein went with them."
You paled upon the mention of the Enchanted Sword. That was a dangerous mission, made for someone of a far greater skill level than what Black Star and Tsubaki could handle. Of course, Black Star was an amazing meister, and Tsubaki was a brilliant weapon, but this was a far too dangerous mission for them to handle. You quietly thanked your classmates, swiftly gathering your things and storming out of the classroom.
"How could she not tell me about this?" You asked yourself aloud while heading to the Death Room. You and Tsubaki were best friends - you were even closer to her than Black Star was. She should've warned you that she was taking on such a risky task. There was no call, no text - nothing.
This was reckless of her. Tsubaki would never do something this crazy. Black Star, maybe, but not Tsubaki. She was the calm, level-headed one in the relationship. But this... this was completely irrational.
You entered the Death Room without warning, briskly making your way down the long hallway. You made it to the main room, fists clenched in anger. Anger at yourself for oversleeping, anger at your friends for not informing you, anger at Tsubaki for leaving unannounced.
"Ah, (y/n) (l/n), how nice of you to join us!" Lord Death said upon noticing your arrival, clapping his hands together. He added on, in a less chipper tone, "Is everyone just going to wander in this room unannounced?"
"Is Tsubaki okay?" You questioned, getting straight to the point. There was no reason to dilly-dally - your friends' lives were at stake.
The room fell silent at that question. You froze, mentally preparing yourself for the worst. Your stomach twisted into knots, making you feel sick. Tsubaki's gonna be fine, she can handle this. I know she can. I...
"Tsubaki is fine... for now," Professor Stein responded, taking a drag of his cigarette. Soul waved off the smoke as it came floating towards his face, scowling in annoyance. The added 'for now' made you queasy.
"She's entered the Enchanted Sword to fight on the inside," Soul explained, glancing back over at the mirror. On display was an unconscious Tsubaki, a bloody Black Star crouched down in front of her. "She's fighting-"
"Her brother?" You finished for him breathlessly. "Yeah, I assumed so... Just didn't think the day would come so soon."
"How'd you know?" Maka asked, shocked that you knew it was Masamune of all people wielding the weapon.
You weren't lying when you said you and Tsubaki were close. You told each other everything and anything. Tsubaki had been the one to confine in you that her brother had become corrupted, and one day, she'd have to fight him. You'd always assumed that the day would be far down the line. But, the secret was out, and it was time for Tsubaki to face this fight on her own. You explained this all to the group, and they nodded understandingly in response.
Still, you assumed that when the day came for Tsubaki to fight her brother, she wouldn't have to do it alone. She would've invited you. You went through everything together. You felt frustrated and hurt at the fact that she had just left without any sort of goodbye.
As if reading your thoughts, Professor Stein turned to you, his cigarette smoke waving through the air. "She's got Black Star keeping watch on her, if that's what you're worried about. She's not going through this alone."
"Yeah, that big loudmouth's keeping a good eye on her. " Soul managed to crack a smirk. You looked back at the mirror, a little relief washing over you. You had to put your faith in Black Star. If there was anyone you could trust Tsubaki's life with, it was Black Star. He'd lay down his life to protect that girl.
Be that as it may, you may have let yourself feel relief too soon. As you turned back to watch the mirror, your eyes widened in shock. A mist was forming around the very weapon Tsubaki's soul was trapped inside. Soon, Tsubaki's own body was being drawn into the sword. You called out Tsubaki's name in fear, watching as Black Star also began to panic a bit, poking at the sword. Maka shut her eyes in fear while Soul continued to watch, clenching his teeth together.
Suddenly, the mist returned around the Enchanted Sword. Only this time, when the mist dissipated, Tsubaki was left in its place. She appeared to be fine - no wounds whatsoever. She smiled at Black Star, and with that confirmation, you let out a sob of relief.
She'd be alright.

"TSUBAKI!"
The girl hardly had time to look up before you were throwing herself into her arms. She caught you with an 'oomph!', stumbling back a few paces. She chuckled softly upon realizing it was you, soothingly rubbing your back.
"You scared me," you admitted for her ears only. You buried your face in the crook of her neck, blinking back relieved tears.
She smiled warmly, laughing that sweet little laugh of hers. "I'm sorry I worried you... I just had some family business to take care of."
Laughing wetly, you placed a kiss on her cheek. The two of you swayed back and forth, not letting each other go. "Don't you ever pull something like that again," you sniffed, smiling, "or I might just have to pull you out of an enchanted weapon myself."
Tsubaki grinned. "I promise."
