Chapter 11

"It wasn't easy to love you.But I did.And I do,and I'll.It's an unspoken choice I made."

PRESENT TIME

Alishka sat in her cubicle,typing away frantically on her laptop.Suddenly the workload had increased immensely,and she didn't know how to deal with it.

A peon cane up to her,and said, "Apa apnake boro shaheb dake!"
(translation:Sister the boss is calling you.)

"Accha thik ase,jao bolo ashtesi.Are hae amake ek cup cha r samosa aina dao,"Alishka replied. (translation:Ok go and tell him I'm coming.And yes get me a cup of tea and samosa.)

Alishka started wondering what the boss could call her for. Her last few articles were praised by people.So she didn't think it would be about those.

She knocked on her Boss,Mr.Shahed's door,and asked, "May I come in?"
"Ms.Alishka!Yes please,"Boss looked up and smiled.Mr.Shahed was at least in his 60s,but his fit physique and handsome face betrayed his age.

"Ms.Alishka.Your last few articles gained a lot of praise.Everyone told me that you are doing a wonderful job.I called you today,to give you a good news.The management has decided to raise your salary,"Boss explained with a smile, "to 40,000."

Alishka sat stunned.What she really wanted to do was give a shriek of happiness. But instead she smiled and said finally, "Thanks so much Sir,I really can't thank you enough."

"You don't need to.Keep up with the hard work,"Boss said and Alishka left.
She was extremely happy.She decided give her family a surprise in the evening.As she was happily bouncing up and down in her seat,Nihal walked up to her.

"What's up?Why you so happy?"he asked as he reached her.Alishka happily told him.She knew he wasn't going to be jealous of her. And he wasn't. "I'm so happy for you!Let me take you out for lunch,to celebrate your achievement,"Nihal said. "Sure?"Alishka asked. "Of course!Come,come!"he said,taking her hand,and pulling her.Alishka giggled and decided to go.

AT THE RESTAURANT

Nihal had brought her too Gloria Jeans,one of Alishka's all time fave place to eat. "Nihal,you really shouldn't have brought me to such an expensive place,"Alishka said,quite embarrassed but smiling,after ordering their food.

"Oh come on!I know you like this place since your teen years,and the food is good too,man I'm hungry!"Nihal said and laughed.Alishka joined him.It really was easy to be with him.

"So what's up?How's your family?"
Alishka asked,after the waiter served their drinks. "Don't ask!Maa is looking for a bride for me,"Nihal said,taking a sip of his coke. Alishka laughed.

"Shouldn't you be happy?" Alishka asked. "Nope,I tried telling her that I want to marry the girl I like.But she keeps on insisting that I meet the girls she keeps on choosing,"Nihal said,making a face.

"Really?You like someone?How come I don't know?" Alishka replied,pouting.
Nihal laughed and said, "Yeah,I do like someone,maybe even love her."

"Omg!Who is she?"Alishka squealed. Before he could answer,their food arrived.They started eating and both of them praised the food.

"So tell me?Who is the lucky girl?"
Alishka asked again,taking a bite of her chicken. "It's you," Nihal replied,not looking at her at all but looking at the food.

Alishka didn't reply.She couldn't.She liked him,but she knew it wasn't love.
She kept quiet.

After five minutes,he spoke up, "I'm sorry.I was meaning to tell you for a long time,but I don't know,but I do like you.As I said maybe I love you."

"Look,I really like you too.But...I don't know,I'm sorry I don't know,"Alishka replied,poking her food. "You love him don't you?Even now?"he asked.

"Yes," Alishka replied,slowly and without any hesitation.Nihal didn't push the topic anymore.

They both didn't talk anymore.Nihal paid the bill,even though she insisted to share and split it.Nihal waved her off saying it was his treat.

The ride back to office was silent and awkward,as both of them were lost in their own thoughts...
