Over the summer Rebecca and Adam visited each others families and went on holiday together. Their hotel room was shabby and the air conditioner loud. But it didn't matter, they were together and that's all they cared about.
The first serious problem arouse out of nowhere for Rebecca. It was the start of the new term, her second year of uni, and they were finally back in the same city.
Huddled in a pub corner together, with the rest of the world seemingly paused, they drank slowly and spoke softly. Everything seemed like normal, until Adam announced he had failed his first year. He was going to have to repeat the year, because he failed one assignment for one module. He had known for three weeks and had not told Rebecca. He knew she would be mad, but hadn't figured out if it would be for not telling her sooner or for failing.
Turns out, it was for both. How dare he keep something like this from her? This affected the both of them. How on earth did he fail? Of course she was mad. But she was also sad. He hadn't wanted to tell her. He had thought she'd be disappointed.
Rebecca took a breath. Unconsciously, she spoke to him like a child. That she accepted that he failed and that is wasn't the end of the world. She was more upset that he hadn't told her for so long. That he could speak to her about anything.
They walked home with Rebecca's mind still mulling over the news. Adam was going to have to retake that one module on its own this next year. That would mean he would have extra debt. And he would have a lot of extra time on his hands so he would have to get a job. At least his presidency of the rock climbing society would keep him entertained.
Adam sat on the edge of the bed, and pulled Rebecca to stand between his legs. This allowed them to look eye to eye, and felt intimate. He apologised for the 30th time that night, and said he wouldn't keep anything from her again. Her annoyance was reduced and they made up.
New Year's was perfect. They were celebrating with Rebeccas friends from back home, at their new uni house. Rebecca's eyeliner was on point. She was drinking Rubarb Gin and Lemonade, her newly discovered favourite drink. Therefore, leading her to get quite tipsy.
Adam and Rebecca hadn't seen each other since they had gone home for Christmas break. Consequently, they spend quite a lot of time in the spare shower room, letting their lips catch up. Countdown time came and they stumbled out and shouted together, both sharing their first new year's kiss. Soon after they walked to where they were staying for the night, where Rebecca spent the next two hours throwing up.
