After we're finished playing, Tanaka starts to talk to Hinata.
"We always play this for new members. Even though it's simple, it's a really cool song. But most importantly, it also shows each instrument off as they join in. That way, it's easier to know each one and its distinct purpose."
I can tell Tanaka really enjoys being a third-year, so he must like having someone to explain this to.
Hinata nods.
"So what do you think you want to play? I mean, we don't have any keyboard players, so you didn't-"
"Guitar!"
...
Hinata scratches his head. "Sorry. I thought the guitar part was really cool. I mean, Nishinoya and-- and Kageyama, they looked really awesome when they played. Even though they weren't doing a crazy solo or anything like that."
Even though I immediately start to stare at the ground after he says that, I can feel his eyes on me.
From the corner of my eye, I notice Tanaka look between the both of us then laugh. "Yeah."
I look back up at Tanaka.
"So you want to play the guitar? Well, Nishinoya can-"
"How about Kageyama teaches you?"
What...?
Nishinoya struggles to put his left hand on my shoulder (he's too short), then puts his right on Hinata's.
"I mean, Kageyama could use the experience. I'm a third-year, so normally this is my job. But I have a feeling you guys could make something great together."
I look at Nishinoya. Based on his expression, he seems to be feeling a sense of self-pride. Then I look at Hinata. He's watching me, and unlike Nishinoya, I have no idea what he's thinking. He just smiles again, and this time I don't look away.
"I guess it's settled then!" Tanaka brings me back into focus.
"You're going to be teaching Hinata, Kageyama."
I sigh. Then I look at Hinata. He's still grinning like an idiot. I sigh (again), and nod.
"I guess... we should get started."
HINATA
"These are the frets," Kageyama points to the metal strips that go down the guitar. "and going across are the strings."
He starts to explain more about each part of the guitar. I'm using a spare one that was already in the room, and he's using his own to help teach me. I try my best to follow along, but I keep getting distracted by his face.
"And you put your finger on each string like this..."
It's strange. Normally, when he talks to me, he looks irritated. But right now, while he's talking about the guitar, he isn't scowling. Instead, his expression is calm. Almost gentle.
It's nice. I can tell this is something he really cares about.
I just wish his face looked like this all the time.
"...And this is fret three." He only looks up from his guitar and mine to meet my gaze.
"Hey. You listening?"
"Ah- Yeah." I do what he was just doing, moving my left pointer finger down the first couple of frets. "One... Two... Three. Right?"
I look at him for confirmation, and he nods. "Good."
We go on like this, him explaining and me listening. He ends up teaching me the E major chord, the A major chord, and a few others.
"All right guys," Tanaka walks over to me and Kageyama.
"Good work today, but we gotta close up soon."
We both nod and Kageyama immediately starts to pack up his guitar. As I go to grab my bag, I realize that Yamaguchi, Tsukishima, and Nishinoya are already gone. Weird. We were probably so focused that I didn't even notice them leaving.
I look up at the clock and somehow it's five PM. I should probably get going before it gets too dark out.
Kageyama's about to leave, but when I run up to him he stops. "What do you want?"
There's that angry look again.
"Umm..." I play with my fingers.
"Today y-you looked-"
I stop staring at my fingers.
"Awesome... When you were playing, I mean."
He looks away from me.
"Oh! And thank you! For agreeing to teach me to play the guitar. Really."
He sighs. "No problem. You better work hard, or I won't teach you anymore."
I smile. "I'll try my best!"
When he looks at me again, with the same angry face, his cheeks turn red.
...No, I was just imagining it.
I think.
He quickly turns away and walks down the long hallway. I watch him until he turns the corner.
"Hmm..."
While I'm staring at the now-empty corridor, I hear a voice from behind me.
"Here."
I turn around. Tanaka is handing me my bag.
"Oh! Thank you, Tanaka-Senpai."
He smirks.
"So, how do you like the guitar?"
I sling my bag onto my shoulder.
I guess this is the time to tell him something that's been on my mind a lot recently...
"I love it! It's just... There's something I've been wondering."
"What is it?"
"Why don't you guys have a singer? I mean, there's a mic in the center of the room."
He thinks for a moment.
"Not to be rude or anything! I was just wondering, but-"
"Hinata-Kun. Do you wanna be our vocalist?"
Huh?
He puts his hands on my shoulders. He looks excited.
...
"What?"
"Come on! You just gave me a great idea!"
I look off to the side.
...
Uh oh.
