KAGEYAMA
I need a moment to recover from what just happened.
...
Hinata just jumped into my arms, sat in my lap, then thanked me.
Casually.
I can tell how embarrassed he is because of his expression. I try to downplay it, for his sake.
Meanwhile, on the inside, I am unfortunately freaking out.
Hinata clears his throat.
"Back to working on the song?"
I nod. "Yup."
We're about to start playing when Tanaka walks over. "How about you guys just leave practice early to grab Hinata's guitar? I know you're...excited."
Hinata smiles. "Yes, thank you!" He hops out of his seat. "Let's go, Kageyama!"
"Hold on. Let me put away my guitar first"
"Hurry up!!" He exclaims, running to the door.
I chuckle softly. "So annoying."
We're inside the store, and Hinata runs up to the front desk excitedly as I trail behind.
"Ukai-san! Where is it?"
Ukai grins. "Hold on, Hold on." He walks through the employee's only door, and after about a minute, comes back holding a brand new guitar case.
"I added the case. The other one was falling apart." Hinata nods and thanks him.
"How much is it?" Hinata asks, pulling out his wallet.
Ukai smiles. "Free of charge."
Hinata's eyes widen. "Free?... But I can't ask you to--"
"Don't worry about it. My grandfather was a friend of the Crows, you know. I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do with this."
He hands him the guitar still in the case, Hinata standing there baffled.
Ukai adjusts the guitar in his arms. "Careful. This is a very expensive instrument. I suggest you don't open it until you get home."
"Got it. Thank you, sir."
Ukai smiles and waves us off.
HINATA
Kageyama holds the door open for me, his eyes glued to the guitar.
"I got it," I say, giggling. "What, you think I'm going to drop it?"
He shakes his head. But when the door to the shop shuts behind me, he takes the guitar out of my grasp.
"H-Hey!"
He sighs. "Kidding. I do think you're going to drop it."
"Am not!"
"Now you won't, but only cause I have it."
I groan, knowing he's not going to be giving it back anytime soon, and start walking in the direction of the school.
"Is your bike still at school?"
I turn and nod. He starts to follow behind me, His arms wrapped securely around my guitar. He would use the straps to wear it on his back, but he still has his guitar as well.
"Why are you following me?"
"Because I don't trust you."
I frown. He sighs for a second time.
"And because...It's getting dark. The walk to school and then your house is really long, so... I'm coming."
"You don't have to do that."
"I don't. I just want to. Just...let me walk you to the school at least, okay?"
I look forward. "Alright."
"You've been acting weird lately," I say, staring up at the sky.
It's dark now, and we're only halfway to the school. Though, Kageyama was right before. When I'm on my bike, I'm fine, but I would be scared if I was walking alone.
I turn around and stop in my tracks. Kageyama stops in response.
"What do you mean?"
I look around, thinking for a moment. Then my eyes meet his.
"Treating me different than before. You're...nicer to me. And now you won't let me walk alone like you're trying to protect me or something. It's weird."
He seems confused. Do I need to spell it out for him?
"Is it because I told you my father died?"
He raises his eyebrows, clearly taken aback. It makes me realize that I was wrong... and kind of embarrasses me that I came to that conclusion. But he still doesn't answer my question.
He pauses, staring at the ground for a minute as he seems to collect his thoughts.
"That's not it. That's definitely...not it."
I take a step towards him, trying to meet his gaze. "What is it then?"
Only now do I notice how close we are.
I stare at the chest I am only inches from. Then slowly, I look up, until I meet his wide eyes once again.
At this point, it is so dark that I have trouble recognizing his expression. All I can do is hear his heavy breaths and my heartbeat.
I inhale. Then I ask again.
"What is it then?"
He's silent. More seconds pass, both of our breaths slowly growing heavier.
"Kag-"
Before I can finish, he brings his lips to mine.
KAGEYAMA
I hope I answered his question.
HINATA
Kageyama gently holds the back of my head, pulling me closer to him. I lean forward, kissing him back hard. I hope he knows I liked his answer.
We stay as we are, closer than ever before, becoming one as we move in complete synch. I learn how he tastes, and it quickly is the only thing I can think about.
I close my eyes, letting myself go.
Soaking up every last drop of this moment.
Remembering everything, even as it happens so quickly. I force myself to put it in slow motion.
It feels so beautiful, so right, yet so removed from everyday life.
It is magic.
It is music.
And it moves me. Just like a song.
