KAGEYAMA

I make my way to the clubroom for the second time.

Once I'm near the door, I see Tsukishima and Yamaguchi walking in together. I walk into the clubroom, following right behind them, to see that everyone is already here.

Am I late?

I look down at my watch.

No, I'm on time.

All of the chairs in the room have been placed into a small circle, facing each other. There is only one empty, presumably for me. It's between Tsukishima and Hinata.

Great.

I sit down. Hinata is staring at me. (Why the hell does he always do that?)

Tanaka, sitting next to Hinata, stands.

"Everybody," He claps his hands, though I'm not sure why since we are all paying attention already.

"I'd like to introduce you to our new vocalist."

I hear Tsukishima speak from my right.

"Huh? There's no one new in here."

Tanaka laughs, and so does Nishinoya. Yamaguchi and Tsukishima are confused. So am I.

Hinata is staring at his legs.

I let out a sigh. "Tanaka-Senpai, what are you-"

Hinata shoots up, just like he did yesterday.

"It's me!" He raises his hand and shuts his eyes. I can't tell if he's excited or nervous.

But...

Vocalist?

Hinata?

HINATA

I can't tell whether I'm excited or nervous. Probably both.

I also can't help feeling a bit embarrassed.

Yesterday, when I asked Tanaka why they don't have a singer, I wasn't asking because I wanted to be their singer! I was asking out of curiosity.

I don't think I'm exactly bad at it, but I don't think I've ever considered myself to be good at it either. But yesterday, when Tanaka asked me to be the band's singer, I agreed.

I'm not sure why I did. But he asked me to sing for him (Which was definitely embarrassing), and then something weird happened:

He thought I was good!

So all of that happened, and now I'm standing here in front of everyone like an idiot.

As I watch my feet, Tsukishima scoffs. "We're choosing him to be our lead singer? Seriously?"

I can hear Yamaguchi mumble a 'Tsukki!' as I look up from my feet.

"Listen, guys..." Everyone is sitting and watching me as I speak. I feel Kageyama's intense stare the most.

I ball up my fists.

"I know that I'm a beginner at all of this. And I'm not exactly sure why Tanaka wanted me of all people to be the lead singer, either. But I am sure of one thing, alright? So listen up--I'm gonna work hard! Because I really, REALLY want to be a part of this band! And you know what? If you think you're better than me just because you have more experience, or if you have a problem with me being the lead singer, then you can leave!"

I'm huffing, trying to catch my breath. I sit down.

The room is quiet for a moment, then Tanaka and Nishinoya start clapping. After that, so is Yamaguchi, who's also smiling at Tsukishima. Tsukishima scoffs again. Kageyama doesn't say anything. He's just watching me.

Tanaka stands again. "Any more objections?"

The room is silent again.

"Okay. Since that's settled..." He grins at me.

"We need to find some songs that you second-years can play. Obviously, we don't have everything together yet, but that's okay. I think the main focus is on finding something Hinata can sing. I know that everyone here can adapt well, so the guitar, bass, and drum parts should be easy enough to figure out."

Everyone nods. Although I'm slightly nervous about singing, I do too.

"Hinata's voice is higher pitched, so we should cover a song where the vocalist is too. There's a lot of cool bands we can choose from."

We discuss some ideas for a few minutes until Tanaka tells us all to practice whatever we want for now.

He goes to talk to Tsukishima about the drums. Yamaguchi starts practicing on his own, and so does Nishinoya. Kageyama and I sit in the corner of the room so he can teach me a couple of new chords.

"This is D major,"

He shows me how to play it. "try doing that."

I nod and look at his fingers. His fingers are long and slender, perfect for playing the guitar. My eyes move to his hands. I've never noticed the calluses on his fingertips, nor have I noticed the veins that start at his knuckles and run down his-

"Hello?"

I look up. Kageyama is glaring at me. "Are you even paying attention?"

I shake my head, not giving him an answer, just trying to snap back into focus.

"S-sorry!"

I hear him mutter "Idiot" under his breath before he looks at the guitar in my hands.

"Here."

Before I have the chance to say anything, he puts his hand over mine. My hands are a lot smaller than his.

I inhale.

He moves my fingers onto each string.

"This is how you do it." He moves his hands away and leans back. "Try strumming."

I keep my fingers where he left them, then follow his directions.

It sounds right. (I think?)

He nods in approval.

"Okay. What else should we..." He looks at the floor, trying to think.

"Maybe I should teach you... No. Let's just go over the chords I've shown you so far."

Kageyama adjusts the guitar sitting in his lap.

"Try playing E major."

I think for a moment. Then I move my fingers into position and strum.

"Good. A major?" This one takes me longer to remember. I think back to yesterday when he taught me how to play it.

I'm reminded of the softness that comes to his face when he plays. And his fingers--why do I keep thinking about his fingers?--as they move to where they're supposed to be.

Then I hear Kageyama. "Come on. You know it."

I do.

I bring my fingers to where they should me. I move my right thumb along the strings.

I look back up at him. "Was that right?"

He smiles.

He... smiles.

It's small. But it's there. And this is the first time I've seen it.

It takes every piece of me to hold back a feeling in my chest.

What is it?

I don't know.

I just smile back at Kageyama. I don't think he knows he was smiling just now. His cheeks are red, and he shuts his eyes for a second.

"Okay- good. Let's go over the rest of them..."

For the rest of the day, I can't take the smile off my face.
