George did try to get over it.
Get over the weird feeling in his chest but it never actually went away.
School was the same as it always was, staying back but not being the outsider.
This weird mix of being known around but not at the same time.
But the thing that did change was the feeling of sitting on the bus waiting to get home knowing that he wouldn't be there.
Knowing that the same fits of laughter wouldn't fill his room, knowing the treehouse would be empty,
knowing that this damn feeling of love in his chest would not go away.

Staring out the window of the bus dreading to get home his phone buzzed.
A text message from Clay.

Clay

Clay
hey what's up?

George
nothing much just waiting to get home

Clay
Oh yeah I forgot about time zones
Ya know that schools in america are actually really different?
Apparently i'm a "freshman"

George
They don't call it year 10?

clay
ikr? weird

George
mhm

clay
hey do you wanna call later? It's been a while since we've heard each other's voices

George
of course!
I'll call you when I get home

Clay
great! I'll talk to you then
byeeee

George turned off his phone completely forgetting about the dread of returning to a empty home.

When he finally got to the bus stop near his house he ran.
Quickly opened the door and jumped into his room, changed and called Clay.

ring ring ri-

"Hey!"
Who would have thought that relief could simply come from hearing someone's voice.
"Hey Clay"
"so what have you been doing"
missing you
"oh you know just the usual, except now I feel like my mom keeps dumping a lot of thing on me! Like one man can only do so much work"
A slight chuckle comes from the other end of the line
"I get what you mean, my moms basically at work the whole day so I get to have all the household chores to myself"
"So how has America been treating you?"
"uhh okay I guess..It's just not the same.
We actually got a day off from school today which was nice but..
Don't get me wrong everyone here is very nice and actually wanted to be friends with me"
"Who wouldn't want to be friends with you??"
A slight red covers Clays face before he continues.

"I guess what i'm trying to say is that it's just weird without you here. It's like this weird feeling in my chest...god I probably sound stupid"
"No no! You don't I get what you mean. It's almost like that feeling of butterflies right? Like a tingly feeling?"
"Yeah exactly!"
"What do you think it is....?" George asked, knowing that what Clays experiencing isn't the same type of feeling he has.
"Honestly I'm not even sure if just makes my heart hurt."
"Me too...who would have through we were both so dense we can't even recognize our own feelings for ea-"
He stops himself

are you an idiot don't give yourself away he only likes you as a friend
George mentally slaps himself

"What was that?"
"oh you know how could be so dense to not even know our feelings?"
"Damn and I thought I knew everything"
"Oh shut up you're letting your ego show"

They talked for a little while more until it finally got late for George.

"Hey i'm gonna go sleep"
"Okay i'll talk to you tomorrow then"
"Alrigh-"
"Hey george?"
"Yeah?"
"Just so you know I really do miss you"
George's heart jumped
"...i miss you too"
"okay...bye then"

The phone call ended but George didn't get in bed he was frozen the words still
playing through his head.
They were simple words you could say to anyone and not have a second thought about it.
But they meant so much more to George.
