Grabbing her stuff Samaira rushed down to her car. Her bright red car was parked at the end of the lane, forcing her to walk in the chilly night. Quickly slipping into the car, she turned it on and rubbed her almost frozen hands together. The old 2011 Toyota Corolla took its sweet time heating up as Samaira drove out of the parking lot. She took a diversion from her usual route and parked in front of the hospital, rushing in to avoid the deadly cold.
She stood at the reception desk, waiting for one of the nurses to assist her. Finally, a nurse saw and walked up to her.
" Good Evening! How may I help you?" he asked, smiling.
" Hi, I would like to meet Mrs.Chauhan, please." Samaira requested, readjusting her bag that was slipping off of her shoulder.
" Of course! Can I get your name and how you are related to the patient?" he asked.
" Yes. Samaira Arora and I am a family friend." She replied, looking at the watch above him, which read 7:57.
" Great! Also, your ID, please," he asked. Samaira dug through her purse until her hands touched her wallet. She took her ID out and handed it to the nurse. He swiftly looked at the ID and back at her, giving it back.
" Please follow me," he said, walking out of the reception desk area. He walked her to the patient rooms and stopped in front of room no.12.
" Just want to remind you that visiting period ends at 9, so in about an hour. She has been on a few pain medications, which make her pretty drowsy." He said, opening the door. " Please let me know if you need anything else" The nurse left the room.
Samaira awkwardly walked up to Sharmila's bed, careful not to make any noise. Unfortunately, her bag slipped off her shoulder, dropping on the floor with a thud waking Sharmila up. As Samaira picked up her bag, cursing at herself, she didn't notice Sharmila looking at her. She looked to see a middle-aged woman with all her grey hair pulled back into a loose low bun.
" Hi Aunty, I am Samaira," she said, walking closer to her, hoping to reduce the confusion on the little lady's face. Sharmila's face immediately light upon hearing Samaira's name.
" Samaira... Please sit down, dear," she said, smiling and lifting her bed up, so she can be in a sitting position. As instructed, Samaira sat down in the chair right next to her, fiddling with her hands.
" Do you remember me?" Sharmila asked.
" Uh-Uhh, Aunty..." Samaira stammered, not knowing what to saw. Sharmila laughed, looking at her face.
" Samaira, I am just kidding! How on earth will you remember someone that you met when you were an infant?" she said, continuing to laugh while Samaira joined her.
On the wall across from her, Samaira noticed Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge's film poster. Sharmila caught her staring at the poster and smiles.
" That's my favorite film... When I was in my teens, I had a huge crush on Shah Rukh." Sharmila explained.
" Really?! DDLJ is my favorite film too! Shah Rukh and Kajol are the best onscreen couple ever!" Samaira said, jumping and hugging the pillow next to her.
" Hundred percent agree! Actually, Vihaan got this poster printed for my 49th birthday last year." Sharmila said, looking at the poster with a smile. Remembering how different life was back then.
" Aunty, you are 50 years old?" Samaira asked dramatically, putting her hand on her heart.
" Did you think I was older?" Sharmila asked back, squinting her eyes.
" No! You look 40 years old! Please give me all your beauty tips! No one will believe that you have two grown sons!" Sam replied, laughing.
" Too much butter," Sharmila teased.
