Y/N squatted next to L's computer chair and faced the open room, mostly to mock the way he was sitting and partially because it wasn't nearly as uncomfortable as she'd thought it would be. The task force was arriving in 30 minute increments, and the only ones left were Light Yagami and his father. The rest of the task force sat silently, some busy, some just...waiting.
During the night, Y/N had gone home and made arrangements. Misa was missing until around 1 in the morning, when she'd returned with a large smile on her face. Y/N had been pretending to be asleep, but based off the context it was safe to assume Misa had gone to see Light. Maki had fallen fast asleep in the spare bedroom. First thing in the morning, Y/N called in sick and told Misa she wasn't feeling well and would be going to the doctor.
She let Maki and Misa take the car into the studio, asking Maki to help familiarize Akihiro's replacement, Suke's brother, with the role. She'd then arranged for a ride (provided by Matsuda) to drive her up to the hotel.
She'd also had a chat with Rem. That was a story for another time.
"Oh, right," she remembered, addressing the rest of the task force. "Last night, when I said that if I died Light Yagami was Kira? Forget that. I should be fine." Then she stared back down at her hands, picking at her nails and refusing to address the looks of confusion among the task force memebers
"Jeez," Matsuda murmured, "what on Earth goes through their heads?"
A knock at the door. Y/N stood up and turned toward the entrance, bracing herself for what would surely be a very tense, very awkward conversation. Matsuda stood up as well and walked to the door out of habit, glancing briefly out the peephole and then pulling on the door handle. After a greeting of formality, the Yagamis entered the hotel room.
Light Yagami had thought the previous night while speaking to Misa Amane that he'd never be more provoked to hit a woman. That very quickly changed upon entering the headquarters.
When he looked at her face, he recognized the casual, blank curiosity that lined her features. She looked like L. And like L, she was supposed to be dead.
The previous night, Light had written her name in the note- written as an accidental death scheduled to happen the following morning. Not only that, but he'd figured out that "Amane" was an alias and written her true name as well- courtesy of the internet. There was no logical reason for Y/N L/N to be alive- unless Y/N L/N was an alias as well. It was infuriating. It was...
A trap? A dull laughter began in the back of the Yagami son's head. Had she anticipated this? Misa had described Y/N as her best friend- was she trying to kill Light, knowing that he'd try to manipulate her? No, maybe she was trying to help Misa succeed. Light had written her name down in order to prevent any third parties from interfering with the Kiras' mission, but perhaps she could be a valuable ally. She didn't have to know that he wanted her dead. She wouldn't benefit from having him arrested when he had connections to both her and Misa. She'd just end up in trouble as well.
Alright, he thought, keeping himself as visibly composed as possible, let's see how useful you are.
"Y/N," he spoke, offering a friendly smile. "What a surprise. I had no clue you were a detective." He watched her eyebrows peak in confusion, hands clasping together in front of her. "Or- are you here for another reason?"
"I'm here for the investigation," she confirmed. Light noticed the other investigators turning slightly to listen in. Even Ryuzaki had paused in his wall-staring to discreetly observe, slowly making his way through a carton of breaded panda-shaped candies. "Ryuzaki has been notably vague about why, but I'm sure you have some idea."
