Short again. Filler-ish but important.

Last time Y/N had been at this café, she'd disclosed the biggest secret of her life and found out that Misa Amane was capable of murdering anyone she laid eyes on. Anything that could possibly happen from then on was not going to be able to top that.

"Before I forget, Misa?" Y/N began, setting her coffee down on the table. "Do you think Maki could stay in our extra bedroom? She's not home very much, but she'll probably need somewhere to sleep until she can find a new place."

"Of course!" Misa chimed in, earning an appreciative grin from the other woman across the table. Maki was dressed in a red button-up shirt, her long, dark brown hair tied into a ponytail high on her head. She looked like a lost waitress. It had been several weeks since Maki and Y/N had met in person, and since then it was clear that Maki had only grown more tired. The circles under her eyes had deepened, Y/N noted, before staring back into her cup. "But, wait- does that mean you and Hinata lived together?"

"Watching Akihiro was a full-time job," she responded curtly, sipping at the chai tea she'd ordered, the black ring on her index finger clinking lightly against the porcelain. "I never thought I'd have the courage to drop him, though. I thank Y/N for that one."

"What broke you?" Y/N asked casually, aware of Rem's looming presence over the table as the Shinigami studied the new female. It was nearly impossible to tell what Rem was thinking, but Maki had never given any sign that she wanted to harm Misa. Y/N was sure Rem would grow just as fond of Maki as she was of her.

"He got drunk last night and started threatening me," she dropped as if it were nothing. "Got a bat out and everything. Kept saying I wasn't in charge of him- which, well, he put me in charge of him."

Miss looked alarmed. She pressed two fingers to her lips, eyebrows raised high. "How are you so casual about that?!"

"It's not like he could hurt me if he tried." Maki shrugged, bringing two fingers up to meddle with the collar of her shirt. "It wasn't really the first time. Anyway, I called the police for once. Handed in my resignation.

"I've worked with him for three years. I made all of his meals and everything." Y/N got the sense that Maki was disappointed to lose the job. Maybe part of her had believed she could help Hinata, or maybe she just didn't feel the need to change. "It paid well, though. I saved some money, so I should only be at your house for a few days."

"Take your time," Misa assured her. "There's no rush for you to leave."

Y/N would have joined Misa's reassurance, but the Shinigami caught her eye. Rem had turned her head several degrees to the front of the shop, where a clean, tall brunette had entered. Though the god of death was naturally not very expressive, it was clear that she was studying him as he walked from the front of the shop to a booth just around the corner. His head disappeared behind the seat. Y/N met Rem's eyes for a brief moment, then looked back toward Light's empty booth.

If Kira also had a Shinigami, could that be what Rem was looking at? Was Light Yagami Kira? It would make sense, she figured, given his father's access to police resources. It was hard for Y/N to stomach the idea that Kira was no more than a gifted child with a God complex.

She recalled at the numbers above his head. If he was Kira, based solely on those numbers, it was definite that he'd be winning this battle against L. Not for long, a few years at most, but winning nonetheless. By now, Light probably suspected her of being the second Kira. It couldn't hurt to at least find out if he was the original.

"I'll be right back," the director suddenly alerted her friends, standing. Both stared up at her with varying degrees of concern, and she clarified: "I have to use the restroom."
