The knock at the door had come during a heated argument between Maki and Misa over the origins of Earl Gray tea. Y/N had no part in the argument, so naturally she was the one to rise from her seat and address the knock, hooking her left thumb in a belt loop and opening the door.

     "I'd like to discuss-"

Y/N closed the door immediately, turning her head toward the upstairs and yelling: "I'm going to the store really quick. Taking the car!"

"Get the TEA!" Misa's voice shouted in response as Y/N grabbed the keys off the counter, reopened the door, and stepped outside, brushing right past L.

"That was rude," he commented, following after her. He was actually wearing shoes, she noted, though it seemed like he'd deliberately left them untied. "I could still hear you through the door. There really was no point to closing it."

"Why is it so difficult for you to stay away from my friends?" Y/N grunted briefly in response, heading toward the car and flipping the keys over in her hand. "And yes, there was. I didn't want to yell in your face."

"In that case, how considerate." He watched her open the door and step inside, garnishing a small frown. "Are you going somewhere?"

"Yeah. Are you coming, or do you have another car waiting around the corner for you?"

L stared down at her from where he stood, hands in his pockets. "I'm not sure I trust you to drive," he said, though he headed to the other side of the car and got in, perching on the seat like a bird on a ledge.

Y/N caught herself growing antsy, and took a deep breath inward.

Regardless of how sudden and unplanned the situation was, she had to keep her composure. She stared at the detective. "Seatbelt," she said softly, signaling to it. He glanced at it, then looked at her, then wordlessly lowered his legs from the seat, buckling the seatbelt over. "I'm going to head to Ito Yokado- there's one just a few blocks down. I'm telling you this so you don't freak out." She started the car, pulling away from the house and beginning the drive over. "So, why are you here?"

He said nothing at first, staring intensely at the director and drawing one of his legs back onto the seat. He truly did behave like a child. "It wasn't obvious? I'd like you to join the task force, Y/N L/N."

"You already said that, and I already gave you my answer." She didn't react much to the suggestion.

"I'll convince you," he returned, turning to look out the windshield. "In the meantime, I'd like to find the loose end."

Y/N blinked confusedly, turning the corner. "Loose end in what?"

"My identity. How did you find my name?"

L watched all traces of emotion flood out of her expression. It took him briefly aback- that was something he'd only ever seen Light do.

She sat in silence, turning the car once more and passing by the grocery store to back into a paid parking spot. Then, as she put the car into park, she fell forward, head hitting the wheel in front of her. The center of the wheel was cool against her skin. Had she hit just a fraction of an inch to the side, she'd have triggered the horn. "No one else knows, L. And no one ever will. Just stay away from my friends."

"By friends," he mused, watched her fingers tighten and untighten around the wheel. She had two rings on, he noted, both on her right hand. He committed himself to asking about them later. "You mean Misa Amane, correct?"
