As the title says, a transition chapter. It is therefore rather short. I finally know where I'm going with this story so the details will begin to click together as the investigation continues :) ily

It was a miracle that he had found them when he had, because any later and Y/N wasn't sure what she would have done. She genuinely had no clue. She likely would have just sat there, frozen in space, unable to move. There weren't many situations that Y/N couldn't react accordingly to. This was one of them.

L didn't seem nearly as troubled by it. When Watari had arrived, L seemed almost disappointed, like his mother had turned off the television during his favorite program. Obviously the question was a test, just like everything else L asked, but Y/N wasn't sure what he was testing her on.

It...was obviously a test, right? She pondered this in silence for the duration of the drive, shivering silently in her damp jacket and avoiding all eye-contact with the detective. When the car pulled to a stop in front of an inn, she hastily removed herself from the vehicle and rushed inside, throwing her coat on the coat hanger as soon as Watari led them to their room. The room was warmer than the outside, but she was still cold. Watari excused himself, claiming he'd go to retrieve their clothes from the car and rejecting Y/N's offer to accompany him.

Aaaand they were alone again. L immediately cleared his throat. "I'm not sure why that came out earlier," he murmured. "It wasn't even remotely related to what I was thinking."

"What were you thinking?" Y/N asked, watching as L used one of the towels from the bathroom to ruffle through his hair. "Because that was very strange."

"At least I asked," he offered in weak rebuttal. "I was thinking about...Misa."

"Misa?" That was a very unlikely story, but she was eager for an explanation nonetheless. L nodded.

"If she aquired Kira's power again, would you be back on her side?"

"How the hell did that turn into can I kiss you?"

"I don't know." He shrugged. "Are you going to answer the question?"

What he'd meant to ask was actually a valid question. The tension left her shoulders, and she let out a long exhale. It probably was an accident. Y/N said strange things all the time on accident. She didn't know why she got so worked up. "I'll make sure that doesn't happen, but if somehow it does..." Y/N bit gently down on her bottom lip, equivocating, then resigning herself. "... I'll help you. You have my word."

"Really?" L hummed appreciatively, sitting down on one of the two beds. "You continue to surprise me. Which makes me wonder," oh no "what would you have answered to that question?"

Please, Watari. Please come back. He didn't. She cleared her throat, opened her mouth, closed her mouth, and cleared her throat again. A pause. "I don't know," she admitted. "What if I asked you?"

"What?"

"What if I asked you if I could kiss you?" This was getting strangely invasive.

"In this made up scenario, are you asking me on purpose, or by accident like I did?" L asked, completely avoiding the question.

"You don't know whether it's on purpose or by accident. That's the point."

L tapped a finger to his chin, contemplating. Y/N didn't know how she felt about how long it was taking him to answer. "I'd probably agree to it."

"What? I thought you'd say well, obviously not. It's completely unprofessional. You and I are mortal enemies. Or something."

"What? I trust you with the lives of a bunch of children but I refuse to engage in a basic human display of affection?" He seemed serious. Y/N was still confused. "It seems odd not to."
