"You're pretty close to the house for someone who just claimed that you couldn't be seen here," Y/N spoke as she approached L, her feet splashing gently at the water as it fell upon the street. "Wammy's house, huh?"

The rain flattened bits of L's hair to the side of his face, droplets rolling off his skin, down his back. The water was cold and unpleasant. "You don't have to pretend to be enjoying yourself," he responded dully. She halted beside the lamppost on the street corner and leaned her shoulder into it, crossing her arms.

"If I could say what I wanted to, I would." Y/N looked silently over him. "You're already naturally freezing. It can't be good for you to be outside right now."

"You can say whatever you want. Nothing is stopping you." L pressed forward, doing that thing where he got uncomfortably close, microanalyzing every slight movement that she made. It didn't really make her uncomfortable anymore. "It never stopped you before."

She laughed, then swug her jacket off her shoulders and tossed it over L's head. "Come on. I can't yell in front of the children." She gave a slight tilt of her head in the direction of the house. L peeked over her shoulder, catching a glimpse of the white haired boy in the gateway, and then took the jacket, wordlessly pulling it down onto his shoulders. Y/N reached over and flipped the hood over his head. It surprised her that he didn't reject the jacket. Maybe he was just that cold.

Now the rain was on her skin instead. It wasn't as frigid as she thought it would be. Y/N brushed past L, briefly grabbing ahold of his hand to pull him with her. Once he began to follow she let go, listening to his feet hit the ground in rhythm with hers. She wasn't sure where she was going but upon seeing a line of trees she quickly walked beneath them, taking the shelter she could get. The trees were beside a swelling canal, running rapidly as a result of the rain. There was a dirt trail leading alongside the canal that appeared to stretch for a long while. Y/N took several paces down the trail, eventually stumbling across a bench that was sheltered from above by a slab of wood. She sat down. L sat beside her.

For a second, she just watched the water, searching for a way to phrase the things she needed to say. Then, with a slouch of defeat, she uttered: "You're fucking insane."

A brief pause. "That's all?" L asked, peeking out from underneath the hood of Y/N's jacket. "I was expecting worse."

"I could have killed every single one of them. I could have wiped you and your whole legacy off the face of the Earth. You gave me the opportunity to give Light exactly what he wanted." She turned, leaning in close to him, taking him by the shoulders. "You know me and Light have a deal. You know I'm trying to protect Misa! Under what circumstances could it possibly be a good idea to give me a chance to win like that?!

"What if that had been my plan all along!? What if my mission wasn't to stop you, but to make sure no one even knew you were gone? That was reckless, L. That was stupid. Just because you're going to die doesn't mean you should throw everything away."

That seemed to be closer to the reaction L expected. But he didn't look angry at the outburst, not even offended. L appeared to be resigned. "Would it be childish to say that I don't believe you're that type of person?"

She released him, continuing to stare him down. "Not at all. It's just childish to put all of them at stake because you believe that."

"I suppose." He broke the eye-contact, staring downward. "Well, that said, I brought you here knowing that if my...departure is inevitable, they will be taking over. I wanted to give you the advantage over Light."
