A month later...
"I, Justice Akinloyè Adaranijo of the high court of Lagos state hereby sentence you, Mr. Matthew Oluwalogbon to death by hanging for the murder of your wife and child. According the section of the law which states that a man shall not take another man's life."
Fade didn't listen to the rest of the judge's speech, she placed her head on the brown board at the court while she cried. This time, the tears were joyful because finally her father was going to pay with his own life. She should have felt sorry for him but sadly she didn't feel anything. Monsters like him deserve no place on earth.
Kate squeezed her hand in reassurance before muttering "are you okay?" She nodded because she was feeling peace for the first time since her mother's death. She knew her mother was in a better place and she's glad for that.
She looked around for familiar faces of those who came to stand by her, Senor Demi Martins, Senior Demi who wore a face cap to avoid public recognition and Even Stephanie was here too. She didn't need a soothsayer to tell her she has people who have her back.
"Did you hear what the judge said?" Katerina asked with excitement lacing her voice and Fade shook her head.
"We are sisters now, oh God I'm so happy" Fade smiled and watch the other girl pull her into a tight hug. She knew they were going to let Kate's family take her and for that she's glad. Atleast she has a roof over her head and luxuries she could have only imagine in the past.***********
"I doubt if my uniform will size me again" Fade sighed while parting Kate's hair to plait it. Katerina looked up from the movie she was watching and Fade gently pushed her head down.
"Queen, if she raised that head again knock her. If she's in a salon, will she be turning her head around like 360?" Her stepmom said from the magazine she was reading and Fade chuckled. Kate's dad named her Queen because after everything that happened, she still held up her head high like a queen.
"I mean I've grown leaner and almost all my cloths are falling down from my waist sef. I wish there's a drug for somebody to be fat" Fade added and Kate laughed.
"You know what you're saying is rubbish because waist just got tinier finish. Your hips is still wide sef" Kate replied and they both laughed.
"When you finish the hair finally after six years, check zobo leaves I'm boiling and switch off the burner. I want to sleep and make sure you people lock the door when you're leaving the parlor oh" Her stepmom warned before walking up the stairs.
"So you and Senior Femi aren't official yet?" Fade asked wiggling her brows as she plaited the last of the braids and Kate looked towards the stairs to confirm her stepmom has gone inside before replying.
"No oh. We are still taking things slowly. You know Kim Kiki isn't still talking to me yet. Sometimes I will say Hi and she will just hiss. Abeg I'm tired of trying" Kate sighed as she stood up from the floor and she wiped her skirt. Fade stood up too before she nodded her head in agreement.
*******
Stepping into Elite College for the first time since her mother's death, Fade felt different. She wondered if things would've changed between she and her classmates and all. She hoped they wouldn't stare at her with pity and all because she hated the pity party.
She walked slowly to her classroom while her mind wasn't in what Katerina was saying. Poor girl probably thinks she's listening. Her mind was anywhere but here.
"Fadekemi how far now? How body?" Malik Kuti asked as soon as she stepped feet into the class. Wowww, so Malik can actually be this caring. Wonders shall never end.
She smiled at him before replying fine and she went straight to her seat and it was sparkling clean. She was about to out her book under the desk when she noticed a neat folded paper. She opened it.
Dear Queen Fade,
It hurts me how much I can't reach out to you during the times that you were down. I badly want to hug the pains away and kiss your tears away but that's impossible.
I want you to be strong for me baby girl and rule the world like a queen that you are.
Yours lovingly,
Mr. Anonymous.Kate snatched the letter out of her hand before she could read the last sentence and she laughed at the content. First day in school, she already has an anonymous admirer. Ko pooor keh.
Kate hissed and returned the letter before pulling Fade to the front seat. She brought out their books and she started copying the notes from where they stopped. Fade sat down and she stared outside the window thinking about nothing in particular.
"Dede my baby, how are youuuu?" Stephanie asked in a gleeful voice before pulling her cheeks. She turned to Kate and she tapped the tip of her nose. Kate swatted her hand away laughing and Stephanie sat on their desk.
Kim Kiki passed Kate and she walked to Fade's side before pulling her into a side hug. "how are you baby girl?" She asked with a smile and Fade returned her smile.
She noticed how Kim Kiki ignored Kate and how Kate didn't even acknowledge her."So you guys, I'm planning a girls only hangout in my house on Saturday and i want you two to be there" Stephanie said and Kate raised her head in surprise. Fade smiled nervously as she watched Kim Kiki's expression. She knew world war three is coming.
Kim Kiki stood up from Fade's side and she walked out of the class obviously in anger while Stephanie ran after her calling her name. Kate shrugged and she went back to writing and Fade wondered what the hell just happened.
