Chapter 9: a matchmaking god complex

Kokichi's POV

This time when I woke up I made sure to pinch myself.
"Ouch."
Yep I'm awake.

"Don't hurt yourself silly." Shuichi walked over to the bed. He had a raspy, just woke up, kinda voice. I'm getting too far ahead of myself here.
"What time is it?" I yawned.
"Around 8:00, the boats gonna dock soon. You should get dressed."
"Okkk." I dragged myself out of bed and went to the bathroom.

As I started to brush my teeth someone knocked on our door.
"Hello?" Shuichi answered.
"Ok, we planned out what to do today." Kyoko walked into our room with a small list in her hand.
"Good morning!" Makoto waved.
"You're just brushing your teeth?! Come on we've got places to be!" Kyoko looked at me.

Everyone was dressed so nicely when I stood there in my pajamas. Makoto had on dad cargo shorts and a Hawaiian shirt. Shuichi had on his normal black jeans but this time paired with a white button up and one of those really cheesy straw fedora hats with a black ribbon on it. Kyoko had on a purple one piece bathing suit with a lighter purple skirt over it and a black handbag to go with the black sunglasses on her head and the ribbon in her hair. My pajamas were the same as Shuichi's last night, a big t-shirt and some boxers.

"You continue to say you two aren't dating and here you are in front of each other in your underwear." Makoto looked away from me and towards Shuichi.
"Where's your suitcase, we need to get going." Kyoko walked over to my suitcase, picked out some clothes and threw them at me from across the room.

I didn't want to fight the angry lady so I got dressed quickly, spit out the toothpaste, and slipped on some flip flops. Kyoko picked out a white pair of pants and another Hawaiian shirt, kinda like Makoto's. I saw her shove a swimsuit from my suitcase into her bag too. Guess she needed someone to go with her.

Kyoko walked oddly fast for an old lady. Makoto was much slower, as though he was trying to make Kyoko mad. I didn't, so I was running to try and keep up with her. Shuichi was closer to Makoto. I guess I've already made Kyoko mad today so I didn't want to again.

Immediately upon touching actual land, I felt myself still swaying like I was still on the boat rocking in the water.
"Ok first things first, check into the cabana." Kyoko read off her list.
"Cabana? We didn't get one of those." I responded looking up to her. She was tall.
"We did, you guys can share ours." She looked down at me. She kinda scares me.

"Thanks Kyoko... and Makoto ." Shuichi slowly walked up behind us.
"No problemo kiddos!" Makoto put one hand in my shoulder and one on Shuichi's.
"There should be a sign by one of them that says Naegi's, that's ours." Kyoko commented.
"Let's go!" I ran off in a random direction, having no idea where I was going.
"Other way!" Kyoko shouted.

Eventually we got to the small beach house. It was really nice. There was a blocked off section of the beach for each cabana meaning we got a part just for us! Kyoko sat her purse on the table and brought out the swimsuit she stole earlier.
"Here. Come swimming with me." The look she gave me looked as though she was asking me, but it didn't sound like a question.
"Ok!" She led me to a small outside shower that was blocked off by a large bamboo fence that you couldn't see through. I quickly changed and ran out to the water. Kyoko was dragging a donut floaty out to the water, complimentary of the cabana.

I ran right past her and jumped into the water, cannonball style. I think I splashed her a bit because she looked pretty mad.
"Sorry not sorry!" To heck with being nice, she can get mad at me all she wants. "You we're gonna get wet anyways."
"Hmpf." Kyoko got into the floaty.
"Shuichi and I will go get some drinks! Want anything?" Makoto asked. Shuichi looked at him as though he wasn't aware he would be going as well.
"Sure! I'll have a margarita." Kyoko responded. It's far too early for this but sure. I asked for a beer. Mm I love day drinking.
"Sounds good!" Makoto and Shuichi walked off towards a small restaurant that was close to the cabanas.

"I heard you two leave your room last night, everything ok?" Kyoko slowly swam towards me.
"Yeah, everything's fine."
"Hmm, I don't believe that. Leaving your room on the last night is perfectly normal, gotta enjoy the night water while you still can. But leaving your room at night on the first day, not normal."
"And you're some expert on when to leave your room on a cruise?" I looked at her.
"Hey, I don't like attitude kid, I've been on a lot of cruises and a lot of detective missions. People don't leave their rooms at night on the first day."

"Well everything's fine, I guess your detective instinct is wrong." I crossed my arms.
"My detective instinct is telling me someone has a crush. And you're pretty damn bold for having a crush."
"Hey! I don't have a crush on Shuichi!"
"Never said you did." Kyoko laughed slightly.
"Ok I'm way too smart to have just fallen for that so you and I are going to pretend I just admitted it ok?" I'm disappointed in myself.
"Yeah sure kid, whatever floats your boat."

"Why does it even matter to you so much." I rolled my eyes.
"It doesn't really, I just don't get a lot of drama and I like playing matchmaker." She moved her sunglasses from on top of her head to actually cover her eyes.
"Well I hate to break it to you, but you can't play matchmaker. He has a fiancé, and possibly a crush on someone else." I threw myself back into the water.
"Who else could he have a crush on?" She asked.
"Don't know, when I asked he wouldn't tell me."

"You know that means it's probably you, right?"
"Nuh uh!" I sat back up.
"Oh yeah." She said, resembling the kool aid man.
"Quit it! Like I said before, he has a fiancé anyways, I was invited to the wedding."
"When is the wedding?"
"It was two days ago."
"It already happened? Then why aren't you calling her his wife?"

"He left her at the alter."
"Oh did he? What'd he do instead?" Kyoko spun around in the floaty.
"He ran away... with me... I see what you're doing here... quit it! I'm not breaking up his marriage just because I'm selfish!" I splashed some water towards her.

"All I'm saying is... you're quit literally going places with him. He chose to leave her alone, and now he's here with you, he left the room last night with you. Oh and what happened up there?"
"Last night? Nothing he just came to disrupt my thinking."
"What were you thinking about?"
"Just life, and how I shouldn't be here, but that's besides the point! Will you quit pretending like you know everything?!"

"I'm not pretending, I do, I'm a god." She said just as the sun peeked put from behind a cloud.
"You have a god complex?"
"No I simply am god, no complex, just facts. Anyways, what do you mean by you shouldn't be here?"
"I shouldn't be here with Shuichi, it's not my place, he should be with his wife right now. But I ruined that for him." I picked up a rock from the sand and threw it in front of me.
"I don't think you ruined anything for him, in fact he seems quite content-"

"Here you go!" Makoto and Shuichi came back, drinks in hand.
"We can talk more later." Kyoko smiled at me and took the drinks from Makoto and paddled out farther into the water.
"Shuichi! You should come in the water! It's really nice in here!" Kyoko yelled. Makoto was already rolling up his pants and moving his beach chair closer to the water.

"Sure, I'll be right there." Shuichi grabbed the bag he brought and changed into a bathing suit. I guess it would be kinda hard to roll up his skinny jeans. Might as well just change your pants. He walked out into the water and sat down next to me.

"Cheers." He clanked his cup on my bottle.
"To what." I laughed, "To running away."
"To rekindling old friendships." He smiled.
"Oh, that works too." I left my face turn a little red. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Kyoko looking at us and smiling.
