I scoop another overflowing handful of popcorn into my hand and try fitting it all into my mouth at once. Watching cheesy Netflix rom-coms are the downfall of my life. Imagine moving to New Zealand and winning an Inn, to then fall in love with the hottest bachelor in town. What a life.
The little voice in my head starts singing That Should Be Me by Justin Bieber and I roll my eyes, staring up at the ceiling as I pick up each side of the pillow and pull it towards my face.
Is it normal to be nineteen years old and deeply invested in fictional characters, and their relationships? Asking for a friend.
A light knocking on my door steals my attention and I pick up the remote, pausing the movie. "Thea, it's almost one-thirty, are you going to actually get up or just stay in bed all day?" My mom asks she she peers inside.
"Well, I wasn't actually planning on leaving it, no" I reply and she raises a brow, her long brown hair still wet from her recent shower.
"So you're becoming a hermit?" She says and I nod, shuffling in the bed to get comfortable. "You're almost twenty Thea, get your ass downstairs and have breakfast, or lunch, or whatever it's classed as now for this time of day." She adds before leaving and closing the door behind her.
Uh, well that was a little harsh. She could have at least said please.
All jokes aside though, me and my mom do have a really good relationship. We're ridiculously close and share pretty much everything with each other.
She always encouraged me to vent to her for anything, no matter how big or small. So I do, any minor inconvenience I have, or news; good or bad, I tell her.
My mom is very open with me and my brothers and explained to us that she was in an abusive relationship when she met my dad.
She just doesn't want either of us to feel as though we can't tell her anything, or my dad. And I love them for that.
There's a lot of children and teenagers who feel as though they can't tell their parents things, and I'm just grateful that we have the kind of relationship and mutual understanding that no matter what it is, I can always share it with them.
The first time I got into a proper relationship, they both sat me down to explain the birds and the bees which was honestly horrific. Trying to sit opposite my dad while he explained how sexual intercourse works when I was sixteen was quite the experience.
Nonetheless, they were super encouraging and couldn't wait to meet him. As friendly as my dad is and as much as he is a big teddy bear deep down, he is extremely intimidating to look at. A huge man, covered in tattoos and arms as big as the fucking hulk is enough to scare anyone off.
