"I want to stand as close to the edge
as I can without going over.Out on the edge you can see all kinds of things you can't see from the center"
-Kurt Vonnegut~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had repeated the process of healing and eating until I heard Keigo stir from the bedroom at about 9:30am. I had brewed a fresh pot of coffee only half an hour ago. "How are you still off?" I say taking a sip from my mug, the warm vanilla flavor dancing on my tongue."I need to keep an eye on you. And maybe get you into fighting shape." A smile plays on his lips as he grabs a mug for himself. I roll my eyes knowing I wouldn't be able to say no to his cheeky grin.
"Well it won't be long now." I pull the bandages off my left arm to show the healing process. The skin was tight and slightly scarred but it was a lot better than this morning.
"What about the worst of it, how's it looking." He says pulling at the gauze on my right arm. I flinched at his touch instinctively. I pull my arm away and unwrap the bandage exposing the still black skin. It looked slightly better. I'm fortunate there was no damage to my bones or tendons. I would just have some nasty scars. The pain meds have been a tremendous help. I feel much better moving doesn't hurt anymore.
"Do you want me to wash and rewrap it?" I hesitantly obliged. I had to get over flinching at his touch. He disappeared down the hall and came back with the supplies. He gently presses a wet rag to my shoulder. I shudder at his touch, I bite my lip. The pain spikes but is tolerable considering he is going through the trouble for me. He applies the burn ointment over my shoulder and down my arm. As he's working on the gauze his fingertips graze my forearm. The same place where the handprint was branded on my flesh.
I flinch, unwilling to show Keigo my face and flee to my room. Each heart beat feels as though it is breaking my ribs. I clutch my chest and press my back against the door. I forced myself off the floor and got dressed. I leave the apartment without even looking in Hawks direction. He tried to follow me and I just held my hand out to stop him.
As I walked the tightness in my chest slowly subsided and I could breathe again. Taking in the fresh air was a welcome change for my lungs. I decided to go shopping. My wardrobe was pretty slim and I could use a change of pace.
The stores had everything from yellow sundresses to black leather jackets. The amount of color and variety was astounding. I picked up a new pair of Van's and boots. A few sweaters, sweatshirts and skinny jeans.
With bags in hand I was going to return home but a quaint cafe caught my attention. I entered the building, my arrival announced by the chime of a bell. One of the servers told me to have a seat and they'll be right with me. I pick a table in the corner and place my bags to the side. The server asked what I would like and I responded with a hot chocolate(or hot drink of your choice).
While studying the small shop, it seems quite nice a few booths, some tables and a counter to go orders. I'm surprised I hadn't found this place sooner. It was hidden by a bigger shopping center and blocked the small cafe. Maybe I just hadn't noticed before.
One customer stood out to me, their frame covered by a black hoodie, their features were undetectable. I turned my attention to the server who had placed the steaming drink in front of me. I smiled and thanked them, I'm sure customer service is not easy. As I brought the mug to my mouth my bandage was visible as my sleeve slipped down.
I uncomfortably looked around the cafe and found the hooded person but they had vanished. I finished my drink, paid and grabbed my bags. As I was walking home I looked to the sky the colors changed into soothing pinks and blues. The scene would make an excellent painting with a few clouds interrupting the cascading colors along with the building silhouettes. It seems perfect, my feet had stopped on their own in my amazement.
In my daydream I had realized it was getting late and Keigo would be worried about me if I didn't hurry. I took a shortcut through an alley it takes about five minutes off my trip.
While I'm walking I become hyper aware of the footsteps behind me. At first I thought it was a coincidence until I picked up my pace and so did they. I stopped and turned around walking straight into the figure.
"What do you want?" I ask trying to get a look at their face. The man stood about 20.3cm (8inch) taller than myself. Now you'd think I would be able to see him but his face and neck were covered with a black mask. But his eyes are the most stunning shade of blue I've ever seen.
"What do I want?" He says slamming my frame to the wall, his arms preventing me from moving "simple, you." Despite my tightening chest I place a trembling hand on his masked face.
"Do I know you?" He averts his gaze but doesn't remove my hand. His arms shake slightly barely noticeably.
"I just saw you at the cafe and found you interesting." Oh the hooded man from the cafe he disappeared before I could get a good look at him.
"Then why didn't you come up to me then," with his close proximity I could smell cigarette smoke on him.
"Well now I know," he says placing a hand on my injured shoulder I flinched as a squeak escaped my throat.
"Well I'll see you around Little Mouse." With that he walked off.
I took a step back as if on the edge of something that was dangerous and dark that I could only hope to see the end.
