You sat there staring at him, he was babbling excitedly, a few tears leaked out from his eyes.
This went on for minutes, you just watching until he finally stopped talking. Looking at you with confusion in his eyes, matching your own.
"I'm sorry! I was just so happy..."
He went to lean forward, but you quickly stopped him by placing a hand on his chest, his face showing even more confusion.
"(Y/N)?"
"I..."
You trailed off just as a doctor walked in, he checked up on your and asked you a few questions.
"Do you know the year?"
"Uhm..." You wracked your brain, "2020?"
"Good." He smiled, "what about your age?"
This one had you even more confused.
"27?"
"Close, 28, but that's okay."
You nodded meekly, a sinking feeling in your chest.
"Do you know your whole name?"
"(Y/N)... (M/N).... (L/N)...?"
"Well done. Finally, do you recognise this man?"
The doctor gestured to the man sat next to you, and you stared at him. The name was in your head somewhere, yet it wasn't coming out. You sat there for minutes just thinking.
"No..." you whispered.
The mans face fell, and the doctor placed a hand on your shoulder, squeezing it reassuringly.
"It's okay, I'd like to get you book in for some tests."
"Okay..."
He walked off, and you kept your eyes away from the man. He didn't seem to know what to say to you.
"I'm sorry.." you whispered.
"What for?"
"I can't.. remember you... yet you seem to be really close to me.."
Daring to meet his eyes, you were met with complete sadness so you instantly looked away.
"Don't worry! I'm sure you'll remember! My name is Jake Peralta. We work together, NYPD, 99th precinct."
"I remember being a police officer. But.. I can't remember names..."
Jake beamed at you, reaching out he cautiously took your hand in his.
"It's alright, you'll get through this. I'll help!"
True to his word, Jake was there every step of the way. He came by the hospital every day, and when you could be discharged he said he'd take you home.
"How do you know where I live?"
You wondered if he'd been to yours before or looked in your records.
"We share a place." He smiled.
You nodded your head in understanding and carefully climbed into the cab before him.
"I see, were we dating or something?"
"Nothing like that." He laughed nervously, "I needed a place and you had a spare room."
"Ah, Okay."
The rest of the ride was silent, even when you reached your apartment. You waited for him to open he door before padding into your room, sitting on the bed and looking around.
"Familiar?"
You nodded your head with a smile, it was great to be somewhere you knew.
That's how it went for months, you had a long period of time off, so you spent time looking through pictures and asking Jake about things.
"You know, we seemed close."
"Yeah, I suppose so." He muttered.
You looked at him from across the couch, and adjusted yourself so you were facing him. Jake noticed this and did the same.
"Do you.. I mean, did you like me?"
Jake sighed, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly.
"Yeah, I did. I still do, I was just too nervous to ask you out..."
"I see.."
You glanced down and stared at your hands. Why did your heart flutter at his words? Why did they make you feel soft and warm inside? Were these feelings how you felt about him?
"It's fine! You don't need to say anything! Let's just watch the film!"
He quickly turned away and you smiled, looking back up at him.
"You know, I think... I feel the same as you. I think I always have."
Jake snapped his head towards you, wide eyed.
"Seriously?!"
You nodded and he beamed.
"Noice! Noice! Hell yes!"
You laughed and beamed widely over at him.
"Memories or not, I think I'd always feel the same about you Jake."
