Sterlings PoV.
Are you done?" Tanner stood suddenly right next to my desk. "Well, yes but what are you doing here?" I still had to finish the rest of the paperwork before I would be free for my vacations, that I never wanted. But the director instructed me those without returning.
"I thought maybe we could go into the fight room and well see if you are still able to beat me"
"Briggs, it is already pretty late and I just" I didn't finish my sentence because my attention shifted to him sitting down right in front of me on my desk.
For one second I caught myself that I stopped breathing. We weren't this close since...
"I'm old and I'm tired" I wasn't in the mood and I just wanted to take a warm bath and go to bed.
"Your are just 29 years old, that is not old. I mean I'm 33 and I can still beat you"
I hated when he acted like a child.
But otherwise, I knew that I was still better than him in fighting.
"One fight and then I want to go home" !
.
.
.
In the end of course I bet him. Tanner was maybe a bit faster in running and good in swimming but I never stopped to train all important things.
"I'm driving you home" his breath was still heavier than normal.
"I can drive on my own" I knew that I was stubborn but the last thing that I needed right now was him driving me back, I didn't even know in first place why he came to do something after work with me.
"I know that you can but I also know that your car is in the reparation right now" And maybe I forgot about this fact.
Without saying something else or even giving him the slightest hint of satisfaction, I stepped outside.
We both immediately stopped.
The whole parking lot was covered in heavy snow, so high that I was standing knee deep in it.
"When did that happen?" The last time I looked out of the window, everything was grey and ugly but there was not a single snowflake in the air.
"I don't know" Tanner admitted.
" Lets go to the car" I followed him. Even though it was in the middle of the night, the snow brought the dark into a light.
It was almost like somebody wanted to point put that this moment might in fact be a little bit magical.
I didn't want to be the one to tell my ex husband that there was no way of getting out here , so I just went silent.
Without saying a word, I opened the door of his Jeep and sat down.
Tanner started the engine but it wasn't working.
He tried it again.
" We should walk" I mumbled.
"No it just need some time" he smiled in my direction.
"Lets walk together, Tanner"
He let his hands fall down in his lap and looked straight in my face.
I haven't called him by his first name since we got divorced.
"But it is over an hour walk until Judds house"
I just nodded and it was freezing cold outside.
"But it just 30 minutes to" I stopped.
I wanted to say our place but it was not ours anymore, it was his place.
.
.
.
We were half done with the walk when he started to talk again. The snowflakes were even thicker and faster now. It was hard to see where the road was and my face was freezing.
"Ronnie" by calling me by my nickname I couldn't do other than shrug together.
"Yeah?" I asked in return and dug my fingernails into the pockets of my coat.
"If you want you can celebrate Christmas with us"
I stopped walking.
He stopped too.
"Listend, I am sorry for what I did six years ago. Tjiara really wants to see you again and"
Six years ago we got divorced and I wasn't allowed to see our adopted daughter again.
I met with her a few times in secret but the last time was ages ago.
"I have to think about it"
"Of course" he went silent again.
And we walked further.
The whole situation felt more than strange.
Being back.
Working for the FBI again.
Seeing my ex husband every day and also not try to think about Scarlett all the time.
All those years I tried to stop the pain but now.
Everything reminded me of her.

"Here we are" The house was bigger than I had remembered . Fairy lights hung outside the gates and in the inside there was light.
"Fuck"
„What is it?" I asked. Maybe I shouldn't come here.
„I forgot my keys" he explained.
With a bit of hesitation I grabbed my keychain and pulled out the right one.
„I'm not sure if it is still the right one"
„I never changed it" without any more words he unlocked the gates and we went to the door and stepped inside.
He hasn't changed anything really.
I couldn't other than standing just there, it felt like a strange dream and then Tjiara came out of the kitchen and I immediately knew I was staying longer than I first anticipated.
