That night, inside Sarmistha's room
Sarmistha got ready to sleep but couldn't sleep. She got up and sat on the bed, wide awake. She thought about what her mother said and looked at the ceiling blankly.
I know my parents are hurting even now. Dada did nothing much. But I? If maa baba knew about me, will they still accept me? Just because he left the wedding and married the girl he loved, everything turned upside down. But I? It's not like I will marry the boy I like. I am just out of all these things. Because I am interested in girls! How am I suppose to explain this to my parents? What if they can't accept it and hurt Disha somehow? No, I should stop being so close to her. I will break up with her. I don't want her to suffer just because of me. I don't know what tests I have to give to get accepted by my family. How can I drag her in this mess? What will her parents think? Will they accept her? Will they accept our relationship? Will they...
All kinds of thoughts roamed around inside her head. She just didn't knew what to do. She loved Disha, but their families were also important. Even if Sarmistha had no problem, will Disha have no problems as well? Will the society ever accept them? She highly doubted this. Maybe, never!
Slowly, she fall asleep. But these questions still found no definite answers.
.....
The next day at school
Sarmistha entered the class and immediately saw Disha. She took a step forward to go to her but stopped.
Sarmistha, you need to stop.
She took a deep breath, exhaled and walked to the opposite direction.
Throughout the day, she avoided Disha somehow or the other. Few times, she just couldn't. But the rest was as she planned.
.....
After three days
Sarmistha left the classroom to go and collect the notebooks from the staffroom.
Disha noticed the weird behavior of Sarmistha and decided to clear things between them.
"Guys, speak softly." Ankita told to the three talkative girls and walked to the back of the class.
"Ankita!" Disha called her name and stood up.
"What happened?"
Disha hesitated. Ankita frowned, but nevertheless walked to her and asked, "What's the matter?"
"Do you know where is Sarmistha?"
Ankita looked at her friends and closed the distance between her and Disha and whispered, "What is wrong with you both? I think Sarmistha is avoiding you."
Disha looked upset and confused. "Same here. I don't know what happened to her. She is acting so strange. I don't know what to do."
Ankita nodded her head in understanding. "She went to the staffroom."
"Can I go?"
"Quick!"
"Thanks Ankita." Disha looked at her gratefully and walked out of the classroom immediately.
In the corridor
Sarmistha just closed the door with her foot and turned around when she saw Disha in front of her. She became absent-minded, lost her balance and few notebooks fell down.
Sarmistha gulped and looked at the wall.
"Misti, look at me."
Sarmistha gulped again in her nervousness and said, "Help me carry those few notebooks." She hurried her footsteps.
Disha bent down, collected the notebooks and ran after her. "Misti, listen to me."
"..."
"Misti, listen."
"..."
"Misti!"
Sarmistha paused for a second and then continued walking.
Disha suddenly grabbed her hand and stopped in front of her, still holding onto her hand tightly and firmly. "Sarmistha!"
Sarmistha knew this will happen. She decided what to say and how to react from starting till the end. She sorted out everything completely. But when she looked at Disha, she suddenly was at a loss of words. She forgot everything and looked stunned.
Disha looked at Sarmistha with a painful look. "Sarmistha, why are you avoiding me?"
"I.. I am not avoiding you." Sarmistha said so softly that she also couldn't hear some of the words.
"What?"
Sarmistha got a hold of herself and said in a firm voice, "I am not avoiding you."
Disha laughed. Sarmistha slightly frowned but kept her cool.
"Sarmistha, you know what"
"What?"
"Lying is an art and you don't know how to lie."
Sarmistha's eyes darted in all directions, but didn't dare to look at Disha's eyes. She had a feeling that if she made eye contact with her, Disha will read her like a book and know everything.
Disha sighed. "You hate me?"
Sarmistha looked shocked and immediately answered, "No, I don't."
"Then why are you avoiding me?"
"I..."
"Anyone said something to you?"
"No."
"Then why? Okay, tell me one thing." She pursed her lips and gupled. "I did something wrong? Tell me the truth."
"You did nothing wrong. It's just that I had a bad dream." Sarmistha didn't have the guts to tell her about the break up anymore.
"Bad dream? What bad dream?"
Sarmistha turned silent.
"Tell me."
Sarmistha made up something in her mind and said, "I dreamt that you left me alone. We became complete strangers and you looked at me with hatred."
Disha sighed in relief. She let go off Sarmistha's hand and patted her chest. "Are you stupid? How can you believe such a dream? I won't leave you ever. I will be always there with you."
"Are you sure?" This answer was very important to Sarmistha. If she said yes, she will fight with the whole world just for Disha.
Disha smiled at her and said, "I am 1000% sure. I trust you more than myself. And I know, you will never leave me as well."
Sarmistha finally smiled after so many days. "I won't leave you ever."
Disha wanted to hug her, but saw the pile of notebooks and gave up on the idea. "Let me help you."
"It's fine. I can do it."
"It's heavy."
"Only five copies."
"Hey, I am not so weak!"
"Oh really?"
"Fine. But don't worry, I will soon become strong."
"Let's see."
"Yup, yup!"
Sarmistha felt so relaxed. Her eyes softened and were filled with love and affection. I won't leave you ever. I promise. She smiled and entered the classroom with her.
Ankita noticed the sudden change in them and sighed in relief. It's good that everything is fine now.
