➨INTRODUCTION?➨

They moved around me in circles, speaking in tongues and yelling at the top of their voices to the extent I could swear I felt the foundation of the house shaking. They were cleansing me to prepare for the university, to prepare for life outside the County. It was sinful, filled with filth and primal desires, lust, obsession, needs, immorality of all sorts.

"We pray they die, they do not reach the heart and soul of our beloved!" Mumm Kamsy yelled at the top of her lungs, thunderous amens following each prayer point. The bowl of water had been completely used up.

My mother came back with another just as she caught sight of my open eyes. Her palm met my cheeks before I could quickly close my eyes. I had been caught.

"We're here praying for you to keep and maintain your sanctity and you're busy staring? You want to be like them? Is that it? Is that why you're so unbothered by all this, eh, Theresa? Answer me!" My mother yelled into my face, her eyes hard and red from the overnight vigil we had done.

"I'm sorry ma, I'll do better, I promise," I begged, tears brimming the edge of my eyes as my cheek stung. Her hand softly touched it, slightly soothing hotness with her cold palm.

"Of course you'll do better, you're my daughter after all." She said before dumping the bowl of water over me.

"Pray with your mouth! Yell and cover yourself with his blood! Seek his guidance!" She kept yelling as she walked around the circle with her eyes closed. My knees were hurting from kneeling throughout the vigil but I didn't say a thing, it was for my good.

Lord knows the evil that laid beyond the County, beyond the white pristine gates that kept us all safe and pure.

Lord knows how much I want to see that evil, feel that evil, know that evil.

I just had to leave first. Yes, I had to escape my own personal hell.

Almost like she could hear my thoughts, her eyes snapped open, meeting my open ones, and she marched towards me, her hand in the hair as she hit me.

"Devil's child! Devil's child!! Close your eyes and pray! Protect yourself!" She yelled between the beating, hitting me harder with each sentence.

Lord knows how much I wanted to escape this hell, her hell.

"In Jesus name, we have prayed!" Mummy Kamsy yelled at the top of her voice after the additional two hours to our overnight vigil because the Devil of the outside world had possessed me.

"Amen!" I yelled along with my mother, voice cracked, throats sore, but I was free.

I was finally free.

She wasn't the emotional type, Theresa Smith will rather be dead than show emotions. Yet, she sobbed into my shirt as I held onto my bags tightly, praying she didn't change her mind again and decide she wanted me homeschooled instead.

"Be a good girl, make me proud, I promise to visit from time to time." She cried, hiding her face in my shirt as she whispered into my shirt.

I pried her hands off," Yes ma, I'll be late if I don't leave now."

I got into the cab, noting how nearly everyone in the County had come to say goodbye to me, I wasn't a soldier going to war; I was just going to a university. With a watery smile, I waved, I waved goodbye to them all.

The grounds of the school looked unkept, litters everywhere, and I stuck out like a sore thumb, but I didn't need to be told that, I knew, I already knew that tiny detail. I knew my long, oversized skirt wasn't exactly in style but it was all I had, I knew the huge blouse that made me look shapeless wasn't either, but I didn't care. They were all I had.

As I walked around I heard noises, shuffling, hushed whispers. Then nothing.

I did something bad, my first sin on my first day, I looked. A girl was on her knees, tears streaming down her cheeks as she stared up at someone, but she looked like she was choking, fighting him.

"H-" My words died in my throat when he looked up at me with such an intensity in his eyes, right before pulling back slightly and shoving forward.

My eyes widened. Was this sin? Was this what sin looked like?

He kept looking at me as I watched, plunging deeper into the throat of the girl on her knees, her voice muffled as he groaned loudly.

"Enjoying the show?" A voice said from behind me and I quickly turned around.

"I don't know what you're talking about," I replied, squeezing my palms into a fist.

"Ah, I see. I don't judge." He said, before making his way towards the duo and mashing his lips against the girl.

Sin, I was in a world filled with sin.

But I liked it.
