John's POV - Friday, November 20, 2020, 10:16 pm
I sat in the corner, ukulele in hand, watching as my boyfriend and his buddies got drunk and partied. They did this almost every Friday, and I was always dragged along. I hated being here, but it beat being at home with my dad.
Suddenly, a girl with curly brown hair and light brown skin walked over to me. She wore a red crop top and skinny jeans. "Hi," she said, her face turning a little pink.
"Pegs? What the hell are you doing here?" I asked, confused.
She frowned. "I'm Maria."
"Oh. Reynolds's new girl, right?"
"I guess you could say that." She fidgeted with the bracelet on her wrist. I patted the floor next to me, and she sat down, a small smile on her face.
"I've never been to anything like this before," she commented, gazing out at the people dancing and drinking.
"I wish I'd never been to anything like this before," I replied. She giggled.
"Who're you here with?"
I looked out at the crowd. "Francis Kinloch."
Her nose wrinkled. "I don't know him very well, but I don't like what I do know."
I sighed. "You won't like him once you know him better, either."
She glanced at me. "You don't like him?"
I looked around, then lowered my voice. "It takes a special kind of person to like Francis. I... I'm not that kind of person."
She nodded. "Same with James, but-"
"Hey, Ria, c'mere," Reynolds slurred, interrupting whatever Maria was about to say. "I wanna dance!"
She sighed, then stood up. "It was nice meeting you, John."
"Likewise."

Alex's POV - Saturday, November 21, 2020, 3:12 am
~Dream~
"Fuck you!" my father screamed, glaring at my mother. "I asked for a normal kid, and you give me this piece of shit?"
I cowered behind James, who was standing off to the side, shielding me from my father's line of sight.
"James, it's not his fault, it's just the way-"
"Look at him! He looks like a fucking monster!"
"He's your son!"
"He's no son of mine!" My father stormed out the front door, slamming it behind him.
Suddenly, I stood alone on a tiny floating island. Hovering above me was my father, wearing doctor's scrubs and a malicious grin. He raised a scalpel and began cutting along the border of the patch around my left eye.
"Let me fix you, you bastard!"
~Dream over~
I awoke, screaming and kicking at the tangled sheets, drenched in sweat. Ned was sitting on the edge of my bed, and when he noticed that I was awake, he watched as I calmed down. When I was still, he placed a hand on my shoulder.
