Chapter 11 - Detective Mel!
Carlisle POV
When I was finally done sobbing, realization hit me. Esme and Aro were in love. My old friend and former master was with my wife now. Soothing her, telling everything would be fine. His red, flaming eyes lingering over her body. Would Esme become one of them? Would her eyes turn red? Shuddering, I laid my forehead against Melody's.
"Thanks." I mumbled, before taking a step back to look into her blue eyes. I was searching for any kind of emotion, but she wouldn't show anything.
"Carlisle?" She asked me, her voice small.
"Yes Melody?"
"Will you laugh at me when I ask something ridiculous?" She asked.
"Only when it's funny."
"What if it's not?"
"Well, obviously I won't laugh because it isn't funny. Why laugh at something that isn't funny?"
"Do you think my eyes are fake?" She asked, tilting her head so it was on my level. My first reaction: No, of course not! Second reaction: Err.. maybe? I wasn't sure, at all. I had met Melody like this; mysterious with blue, stunningly beautiful eyes. For me, it was a piece of her.
"No" I answered full of confidence. They weren't fake, they were hers and she 'made' them herself.
"Err, that wasn't really it..." She said uncertainly, looking at her feet, as she always did when she was embarrassed.
"Then what was?" I urged her to talk.
"You should be angry at me. But no, instead you thank me!" She said angrily, punching a set of drawers into dust. "First, I act as if I'm human, which I'm not, so that's practically the same as lying."
"But Okkar sa-"
"Secondly," She almost roared, overpowering my attempts to prove her wrong, "I kill a human in your hunting area, which could have easily been family or friends of yours. Thirdly, I almost killed one of your sons, Jasper, if Alice hadn't stopped me. And last but not least, I scared away your wife, AKA mate!" She screamed throwing her hands in the air and causing a stream of vampires to run down the stairs. Her eyes were two glowing rubies now. No blue, only red.
"What's going on?" Asked an extremely alarmed Edward, a just as agitated Bella beside him. "O" he said, looking at Melody's eyes. "Wow, err..Yeah." She left him speechless, which was no doubt an achievement. Emmett, Rosalie, Jasper, Alice and Renesmee were speechless, too. For once I wished to have Edward's gift to read what was going on in their minds.
"What's with the eyes?" Emmett suddenly asked.
"Shh, leave them alone, Christ.." Edward mumbled, now not only dragging Bella and Renesmee, but also Emmett out of the room.
"Come on, Jazz" Alice mumbled, of course already knowing the story behind the eyes like Edward.
"I just don't get it, you are so.. so naïve.." Melody finished when the room was finally empty again. She slowly let her finger slide over my cheek, her eyes blue again. I moved her hand from it's previous location and gently pushed her away from me, trying not to offend her.
"Don't, Melody, not now."
"I-I'm sorry.." She stuttered, face matching the colour of her previously blood-red eyes. That blush was so cute if I could just touch her cheek and..-
"Carlisle!!" I heard Edward roar from upstairs, "Keep your head straight!" I sighed in defeat. Melody giggled slightly, an amused smile playing on her lips.
"What were you thinking, dr. Fang?" She asked, still amused. When she saw the look on my face she quickly sobered up again. I slumped back onto he couch, Esme's letter still clenched in my hand. I was doing the wrong thing, I could feel it. "Can I.. read it?" Melody asked, sitting beside me and taking curious glances at the letter in my hand.
"Go ahead.." I mumbled, lost in my thoughts.
Melody POV
I read the letter over and over again. Multiple things were wrong. One: Aro had a wife, Two: Esme would never EVER do such a thing as saying goodbye trough a letter OR dating Aro, Three: Multiple letters were first crossed out, then re-written above. Vampires didn't make mistakes, I told myself. Forming together the letters, it read:
'eilastielsilracempleh'
Confused, I nudged Carlisle's arm.
"Ow! What is it?" He asked me, rubbing the spot on his arm where I'd nudged it.
"Don't you think this is a little odd?" I asked, pointing to the 'mistakes' Esme had made.
"Probably distracted by her sobs.." Carlisle mumbled, eyes far away. Slightly irritated, I waved my hand in front of his face.
"Carlisle, Vampires don't make mistakes!" I said, waving my arms to try and get a logical answer or conclusion out of him. He had been acting remarkably weird since he got the letter. Pretending there wasn't sitting a kind of godly-looking zombie next to me but instead the smart and contained doctor I knew, I went on. "When you form he letters together, it reads: 'eilastielsilracempleh'.." I finally heard how dumb the word sounded when you tried to pronounce it properly, and almost went into a fit of hysteric giggles, until I saw Carlisle look at the letter intently.
"That's it!" He said triumphantly, "Help me Carlisle, it's a lie!" he exclaimed. That was my turn to be confused. I managed to stutter something that sounded like 'what?' before he shoved the letter back in my hands. "Put the letters together the other way around!"
"Helpmecarlisleitsalie.. Help me Carlisle, it's a lie!" I exclaimed, looking at the paper in shock. "Indeed! Carlisle, we need to get to Volterra!"
"Edward, Alice!" Carlisle called out. This time only two vampires ran into the room. "She never left me, Edward, Alice. She was taken by Aro." I said. They gaped at me in shock.
How come Alice, nor Okkar had known this?
