I'm sure I'm not the one you're interested in. This story was not about me, but about the love of my life. Kino, the most amazing, terrifying, beautiful, interesting person I've ever met. He's the one that starred in this.
Well, Kino and I stayed together for three years.
Believe me, it would have been longer, if it wasn't for Kino being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It would have been longer...
But he's dead.
I know. It really, really pains me to say that. Kino didn't deserve what he got. It wasn't even a noble death that had to do with him sacrificing himself, or doing something heroic.
It was a driveby.
Pointless, random. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Yuto had mentioned to me before that he and Kino lived in a bad neighborhood when they were growing up. I didn't think of it when Kino told me he was going to see his parents. I should have remembered. I mean, Yuto had that scar and everything. I do somewhat blame myself because I wasn't there when it happened.
It was my junior year of college, Christmas break. I got the call as I was packing to go home myself.
I don't think it's possible for you to understand the amount of intense pain I felt when I heard that Kino had passed. Well, unless you've lost your significant other. Then of course you would. It's like your heart is completely crushed, destroyed, ripped out. My mind was reeling, but I couldn't think. I dropped my phone and sobbed for hours.
I told my parents I wouldn't be making it home for a few days, and I just laid on the ground and cried.
I just couldn't believe it. How was he gone? How was my amazing, sweet boyfriend, the one I planned on spending my life with, suddenly taken away from me?
I don't think I stopped crying for weeks, months. Yuto was there the whole time and got me anything I needed, helped with whatever I asked.
He was grieving too, but he didn't cry. He focused his energy on taking care of me. The funeral was the most painful thing I ever had to go through. His parents and I were complete messes.
So yes. Kino, the hero of this story, is gone.
I often wonder if he saw it coming. Not only in the sense that he actually saw the car driving up, but... you know. If he saw it through their eyes. If he saw himself... get killed.
No one will ever know.
So it's been twelve years since the murders. Ten years since Kino passed.
Dawn is still in jail, and I still talk to some of the other guys. Yuto and I... well, lots of things happened.
We're married.
I know. You're angry. "How could you do that to Kino?!" You think. "Did you always have feelings for Yuto?"
Look.
Yuto and I were friends all the way up until six years after Kino was gone. We were both in rough spots. I was still trying to deal with Kino's death, and Yuto was more down than usual. We were at my house, talking, trying to have simple conversation. It had been six years, but his birthday had just passed, and it brought him back a little. He would have been twenty-seven.
So Yuto was about to leave, but I asked him to stay. He accepted, but it was as if we both knew what was coming.
Yes... that happened.
