Our Thaumaturgical department defines magic as: "any warping of reality or laws of physics through the emission of mana"

By this definition, an esper's ability is similar to magic being that all espers emit An Involuntary Movement(AIM) field passively to use their abilities. Just to be acknowledged as an Esper, you need to at least emit some level of this AIM energy to interfere with reality on some level so that the existence of your ability becomes possible.

The Telekinesis Class of espers typically emits the most amount of this radiation for the manipulation of physical objects or rarer cases: the manipulation of physics itself requires a large amount of AIM.

For example, if your ability is tactile telekinesis, your AIM field would extrude pressure outwards like a personal shield all over your body.

Now one may be wondering: if Hard Magic and AIM work pretty much the same, why do they react violently with one and another?

This is one of the main mysteries about espers that we are still trying to figure out. Our leading theory is that since mana, the very essence of magic, is the opposite of the AIM field in a way similar to the relationship between normal matter and antimatter; they both achieve the same result except with different methods and destroy each other if they interact.

However, this theory doesn't hold credence when trying to explain why a certain type of magic like Runes, Tailsman, and Magi-tech work in the presence of AIM fields. One possible explanation proposed by Dr.Koharin is that 'passive' magic doesn't work in the same way as 'active' magic like, say, a fireball does. This is further explained by the fact that magicians invited for testing at Academy City can barely use any 'active' magic, hinting at the possibility that in the presence of a high amount of AIM, mana generation is slowed or even stopped.

Other theories lean towards differences on a conceptual level and introduce the idea that perhaps Magic and AIM are 'alive' and 'sapient' in some way, shape, or form.

However, this theory is often dismissed by the greater scientific community within the Esper Faction as there is no proof of such things.
