Just as a disclaimer, I decided to make the way everyone's Soulmate tattoo a bit different. So i.e, one person can have the initials written on their forearm, while another person can have any writing be seen on the other person's arm.
The day you turn 10 is supposed to be the second happiest day of your life. Not only because it's your birthday, but because it is the day you get your Soulmate tattoo. It's the sign that lets you know you are not alone in this world. A sign of hope and love within the calligraphic writing. That is what it's supposed to be.
I remember the day I turned 10, I was racing down the stairs to my parent's room despite the sun barely waking up from its slumber. I was so excited to find out who my Soulmate was, the possibility of him being dead wasn't possible. All I saw were words in neat handwriting, surrounded by astronomical doodles.
My parents woke up and saw my tattoo, their faces said it all. They were shocked and worried. While other kids celebrated their tenth birthday, I had a serious conversation about my Soulmate not being a part of this world. He was dead, it said so on my tattoo. My parents tried to comfort me by saying that people like me were still able to find love but I was doubtful.
Timeskip to about 5 years later~
"Hi, Yashiro-Chan!" I greeted. "Any luck on finding your Soulmate?" The daikon turned her head and smiled back at me, followed by Aoi from behind.
"Not yet, but my Soulmate got a cut on his wrist, so I just have to find someone who has the same cut, and hopefully he'll realize I'm his Soulmate!" A pang of jealousy ran through my body. Out of habit, my fingers trailed my forearm. Yashiro looked down guiltily.
"I'm sorry Y/n-Chan, I'm sure you will find your Soulmate eventually..." She said. I didn't believe what she said but I smiled anyway. I sat down at my desk and got out my books for class.
"Actually, there might be a way for you to meet your Soulmate!" I turned my head briskly towards Aoi.
"How do you propose that will happen?" I inquired. Aoi got closer.
"Apparently, the school is comprised of 7 school mysteries. Have you heard of them?" I shook my head.
"Well, the most popular one is Hanako-San of the toilets. It's said that if you summon her correctly then she will grant any wish of yours but in exchange, you must sacrifice something of equal value." She stated. Aoi continued to explain how to summon the supposed ghost girl. I of course was skeptical of such rumors.
"So are you suggesting that I wish for my soulmate to be alive again?"
"It's better to try then to live complacently," She shrugged. I supposed that even if the rumor was false, the worst that could happen was it being fake. I glanced up at the clock and read the time. By the end of the period, I decided I would test out the legitimacy of this rumor.
Time Skip~
As soon as class ended, I hurried to pack all of my supplies and rushed out to find the isolated girl's bathroom. I found the bathroom and slowly opened the door. It was empty, thankfully, so I stepped inside. The air was stiff and cold, despite the window letting in the sunlight.
I took a small step forward, and then another until I stood in front of the third stall. The anticipation inside of me was building up. I nervously held up my hand and knocked three times on the old, rusty-looking door.
"Hanako-San, Hanako-San, are you there?" I called out. I waited for some kind of sign to prove that another was being here, but empty silence continued to fill the void. It wasn't until then that I noticed I was holding my breath. I took a deep breath in and turned around, disappointed.
