The words on the page painted a vivid scenery of a pair of best friends, a boy and a girl who were madly in love. However, they were not aware of each other's feelings. It was a book that my best friend, Yashiro, lent me. I normally don't fancy romance novels, but Yashiro kept talking about it, so I eventually got curious.
Now I finally understood what all the fuss was concerning. The book depicted a love story between two friends and the tribulations surrounding them. The story was something I desired immensely in real life, but love was such as foreign subject that I was too scared to explore.
For the past few days, I have been reading non-stop. I was so close to the end, and I was eager to conclude. However, due to my (somewhat) unfortunate connection to a perverted toilet ghost, I had to put down the precious book to clean the bathroom stalls. That didn't stop me from talking about it.
"...And so then the boy gets jealous because he sees her talking to someone else and he loses the courage to confess! I hope they get together in the end. Right, Hanako?" I stopped mopping and looked over to the apparition. He sighed.
"Don't worry he will come to his senses and realize the jealousy he feels is unwarranted because he has known her for longer and loves her more than the other guy ever will." He replied. Hanako looked over at me with a straight face. For some reason, he has been acting out of character for the past day or two. His expressions have been lacking, plus his overall enthusiasm seemed to be gone.
"How do you know that? Have you read this book?"
"It doesn't matter what format it is, romance stories are always the same. Once you have seen one, you have seen them all." I glared back at Hanako. How dare he accuse this wonderful masterpiece of literature of being cliche.
"You just a boy, you don't understand how it feels to want someone to love you for who you were and not as some pretentious brat or introverted outcast." I picked my mop back up but as I was about to continue with cleaning, a hand wrapped around my waist.
"I know exactly what it feels like to want someone to pay attention to you." He whispered in my ear. I could feel his breath softly hitting against my cheek. I tried to wiggle out of his grasp, but he latched on tighter.
"You've been spending a lot of time reading that book of yours when you could be spending time with me," He continued.
"W-What do you mean, Hanako-Kun?" I stuttered. He let out a slow chuckle before turning me around so I could meet his eyes. A smirk was plastered on his pale face.
"You know exactly what I mean, my dear." He stated. "Although you are so fraught to find love you are unaware of the person who truly cares about you." Hanako gently took the mop out of my hand and tossed it to the floor. I stared up at him in confusion as he pulled me along to the window sill.
"Someone likes me?" I asked.
Hanako let out another sigh before gesturing to the book, the bookmark still hanging out of the page. "You don't need to read some dumb book to experience romance when you've got me."
I tried to wrap my head around what he just said. Did Hanako like me? Was he jealous of the book? I felt the heat rise in my cheeks. Before I could say anything else, Hanako moved closer to my face. His right hand moved to intertwine itself with mine while his left tilted my chin up slightly. My eyes flickered down to his lips, and for a split second, I wondered what it would be like to feel them brush against mine. I mentally shook my head. We were merely inches away from each other. The proximity, however, was not close enough. I found myself counting each millimeter as if it mattered.
"To be honest, I was irritated that you weren't spending enough time with me like you usually do." He murmured. "I wanted you to notice my feelings for you."
"I-I think I prefer you over the book," I said after a brief pause. Hanako's eyes illuminated bright yellow and orange. A soft pink hue dusted to his cheeks. With the small motion of his hand, Hanako brought my chin up to his.
The kiss was short and sweet and left me craving more once we pulled away. Hanako pushed the book off the window sill so he could make more room. The bookmark proceeded to fall out of the book and onto the floor. I shrugged and focused my attention back on Hanako.
"I'm sorry for being too caught up in that stupid book, you were right it is kinda cheesy." I giggled, still a bit flustered over the kiss.
"It's okay, I knew I would win you over somehow." His mouth twitched up into a smirk. It looked like he was back to his regular self, at least for the time being. Hanako reached for both of my hands and weaved them through his. He began to inch towards me again and press his lips on mine. I kissed back, knowing that this warm feeling in my chest would never go away.
Before you guys say anything, I know that the ending is reallllllly cheesy. I was writing this yesterday night and I was pushing myself to finish but I was stuck on the end. So I decided that some sleep would help, but I still had a hard time trying to fit an ending in. Other than that I think it turned out okay. I'm going to try and release a one shot idea I had tonight so be on the look out for that ^w^
