The day was clear. No clouds were in the sky above. Heatherheart stood in front of all the cats as she was just getting ready to send out the evening patrols.

Honeysong flicked her tail at the tom sitting next to her. Dustywing's eyes kept traveling over to look at her. She sent him a quick glare before paying attention back over to Heatherheart.

"Barkpelt will lead a border patrol with Grayspot, Dustywing, Frostpaw, and Timberfang. You'll patrol along the Meadowclan border," the deputy called out. The four cats gathered in front of the camp's entrance before taking off out to the territory. "Juniperslash will lead a hunting patrol with Snowcloud, Poppymist, Honeysong, and Pebblewing."

Honeysong stood up from her spot and found the rest of them waiting for her. Juniperslash waved his tail for them to follow. He led them out of the camp and took them through the trees until they found a good spot to hunt.

Juniperslash padded up next to her as the rest were slipping off to hunt. "I wanted to tell you that Barkpelt really cares for you. He was heartbroken when Sunmist died. You look so much like Sunmist that he would only see her whenever he looked at you."

"I really don't want to talk Barkpelt right now. Let's just focus on hunting," Honeysong meowed and walked away from the black tom.

She scented the air to find any prey around her. She picked up the scent of a squirrel. She looked over and saw it nibbling onto a seed. She crouched down and slowly padded forward. She waited to see if it detected her before she sprang up in the air, She landed right on its back. She finishes it off as it goes limp in her jaws.

She was buried under a bush to mask its scent. She padded away to see if she could find anything else. She scented a sparrow. She crouched down and crept forward.

As she was about to spring the sparrow flew away. A flash of white fur appeared in front of her. Frostpaw stood there as his chest moved fast as if he was running.

"We need your help. A... a fox is attacking the patrol over by... Meadowclan territory," he spoke, out of breath.

Honeysong turned and called for the rest of her patrol. They all appeared from the bushes around her. "The border patrol is being attacked."

"Frostpaw, go back and tell Curlstar," Juniperslash told the apprentice. He nodded and took off towards camp. "Let's go!"

The patrol ran through the forest to save their clanmates. They were soon able to hear their yowls. They broke through and saw the fox hovering over the three cats. Its jaws snapped at the cats.

Honeysong jumped onto the fox's muzzle and clawed at its eyes. The fox cried out and shook its head. Honeysong flew off and landed on the ground. She pulled herself back onto her paws.

The rest of the patrol was already fighting the fox. Grayspot was sitting off to the side. A deep gash was visible in her leg.

"Are you okay?" a cat asked her. She looked over and saw Dustywing. She nodded and the two flew back into battling the fox. Honeysong clawed at its legs. She leaped out of the way when the fox turned its head over to snap at her.

She jumped on its back. She dug her claws into the fox's pelt to hold herself on. She crawled over to the fox's head. She then clawed at the fox's eyes once again. The fox whelped and shook its head to throw Honeysong off of it.

Honeysong tried to hold on but lost her grip. She fell to the ground right in front of the fox. She looked up as the fox towered over her. She froze in fear as the fox leaned down and took her in its jaws. She felt its fangs crush into her skin. She was shook around before being thrown into a nearby tree.

"Honeysong!" she could hear someone call out. She assumed it was Dustywing.

The fox turned over to her again, but she couldn't save herself this time. The fox's jaw opened ready to consume her. She closed her eyes ready for her fate to happen.

A loud crunch filled Honeysong's ears. It wasn't from her body though. She opened her eyes and saw Barkpelt's limp body hanging from the jaws of the fox.

Blood dripped down and covered the ground in front of her. She watched as the fox tore Barkpelt's body. Her clanmates attacked the fox once again. The fox dropped Barkpelt's body. He laid right in front of her.

His pelt was torn and his eyes were only half opened as his dead body stared right at her. He risked his life to save me, she thought.

More cats emerged from the bushes. Frostpaw had brought more of their clanmates to help. With more paws, they were able to drive the fox away.

Dustywing came running over to her. "Honeysong, are you okay? Can you walk? Let's get you back to camp," He turned around as Timberfang helped her move onto his back.

"Can you get Barkpelt?" she asked the cream tom. He just nodded and padded away to Barkpelt's limp body.

Dustywing carried her back to camp. She was immediately brought to the medicine cat's den. She was laid in a nest of moss. Mouseshine examined her and applied herbs to her cuts.

"It looks like you didn't break anything. You only just sprained your hind leg. You'll have to stay here and do some exercises in order for you to regain strength back in your leg. It will only take a little over a moon."

Honeysong only just nodded her head. She was watching outside the den as her clanmates laid Barkpelt's body out in the clearing.

He must have really cared for me. I pushed him way all the time. He must have felt even more pain because of me. I should have grown closer to him. Now he is dead because of me. I have nobody.

Dustywing carried in a mouse from his jaws. He dropped it in front of her.

"You need to keep your strength up if you want to recover faster," the black tom told her. She pushed it away and buried her muzzle under her paws.

"I'm not in the mood. I need time alone," she meowed. Dustywing looked at her sadly and dipped his head and padded out of the den. He glanced back at her one more time before leaving her alone.

Honeysong laid her head down on her paws. She stared out at the distance of the camp. Mouseshine had just finished going around and treating all of the injured cats. She was now standing over Barkpelt's body.

She fixed his body and applied rosemarie onto his fur to mask the scent of death. She positioned his body to make it look like the tom was sleeping.

Honeysong's heart was heavy. She watched each cat padding up to the senior warrior and touching their noses in his pelt to wish him a safe trip to Starclan.

"Do you want to say your last words to Barkpelt?" Mouseshine padded over to the cream tabby. She didn't even care to look up at the medicine cat.

"I don't deserve to say goodbye. I treated him terrible for moons when all he did was care for me," she meowed.

"I'm sure he would appreciate it if you would say goodbye. His last wish was to save you and now you should repay him by thanking him." She sat down and placed her tail around the young warrior's back.

"He doesn't want to see me"

"Suit yourself. But I promise he would like it if you would thank him one last time." The gray tabby she-cat turned her back and made her way back out to sit next to Barkpelt's body.

Honeysong couldn't take it anymore and moved her head to look away from the clearing. She hissed when her hind leg moved, but it allowed her to not feel as depressed as she did while watching her dead father. But not all the pain was gone. The scene kept flashing back through her mind. She closed her eyes and covered her ears. She couldn't take it.

Maybe I just need some sleep. Then I'll just forget about it for a little while. She tried to block out all the sounds around her as she forced herself to get some sleep
