    Honeypaw padded into the camp

Honeypaw padded into the camp. She carried nothing in her mouth from the patrol that she just went out on with her mentor. Honeypaw didn't care. She just wanted to curl up in her nest and fall asleep.

"Honeypaw, you were so unfocused this morning. What is going on? Your assessment is coming up and you aren't trying to pass," Honeypaw's mentor, Heatherheart said. Heatherheart was the deputy of Cottonclan. So she likes to push Honeypaw even harder because of her high position.

"I don't feel like doing anything right now. I just want to stay in the camp." Honeypaw followed her mentor when she went to drop her prey off into the freshkill pile.

"Honeypaw, I know Sunmist died, but you can't let that overtake the rest of your life."

Sunmist was Honeypaw's mother. She died the last moon from a dog attack. She was out on a hunting patrol and she wandered off on her own and was attacked by a dog from the nearby twoleg place.
It took Honeypaw a while before she ever left the camp. She would sit alone far off in the corner away from everybody. She hardly ever ate and only moved to go to the dirtplace or head back to her nest.

"I don't care. I want to be left alone. Just leave me to grieve if that is what I need. That is what is best for me," Honeypaw lashed her tail and marched away from Heatherheart.

Heatherheart chased after her, but Honeypaw only ignored her. She sat back in her corner, staring out into the distance.

"Honeypaw I do care for you. I just wanted you to become a good warrior. You can stay in camp tomorrow only if you promise me that when I take you out, can you at least try to feed your clan?"

Honeypaw murmured a quiet yes. Heatherheart flicked her tail goodbye before wandering off to chat with some of her clanmates.

Honeypaw laid there until sunset. She never ate anything and watched her clanmates come in and out of the camp. She wanted to help her clan, but she missed Sunmist so much. She was always on her mind.

"Hey, Honeypaw," a cat called out to her. She turned her head to see Mintpaw come padding up to her. Her sister, Frostpaw, was following behind her.

"You want to share something to eat before heading into the den. Heatherheart said you never ate anything today," Mintpaw said pushing a rabbit towards her.

"I'm fine," Honeypaw mumbled. She looked away from her denmates and stared back at the camp entrance, where the last patrol was making their way in and heading to their den's for the night.

"Come on. I know you're hungry. Just a few bites," Frostpaw pleaded. Honeypaw sighed and reached over to pull the rabbit closer. She took a few bites before pushing it back over to Mintpaw.

"I'm going to sleep," Honeypaw said, standing up and leaving the two apprentices alone.

"I guess Heatherheart was right. Something isn't right with Honeypaw. We should go talk to Mouseshine," Mintpaw said to her littermate.

Honeypaw scoffed when she heard the two talking. I'm perfectly fine. Nobody needs to worry over me. Just leave me alone, Honeypaw thought. She walked into the apprentices den and curled up into her nest. She laid her tail over her nose and drifted off to sleep.

Honeypaw woke in an open forest. There weren't any sounds or scents around her. She walked around to see anything or any cat was around her.

There was a shuffle of a bush behind her. She turned around, but nothing was there. She continued on, trying to find anything around her.

She stopped when she saw a cream she-cat standing in front of her. Her fur blew through the wind. Her tail was tucked neatly around her feet. She wasn't looking at Honeypaw but was staring off into the forest.

"Sunmist," Honeypaw whispered. The sparkling pelt of her mother stood in front of her. She never looked back when Honeypaw called her name.

Honeypaw padded forward and touched her nose to her mother's shoulder. Sunmist looked down at her kit. She licked Honeypaw's ear, liked how she always did when Honeypaw was young.

"Honeypaw, I've been watching you. Why aren't you helping the clan? You've been doing nothing every single day," Sunmist spoke. There wasn't a harsh tone in her voice, but she spoke softly.

"I miss you so much. I want you by my side, not in my dreams," Honeypaw lowered her head.

"I've wanted you to become the best warrior in Cottonclan. You are almost a warrior. You will never become one if you continue this behavior."

"I promise to work hard again. Barkpelt never pays attention to me. He will just run off with other she-cats. I'm surprised none of them have been expecting yet."

"Don't mind your father. It took a while before Barkpelt and I ever became mates. He did go off with other she-cats, but he stuck around when we became mates. Then we had you. We both loved you very much. I just think you remind him of me. He might be still heartbroken."

"Then why does he go off with a bunch of she-cats. I don't consider him as my father anymore. He doesn't care about me."

"Give him time. Both of you are grieving. I have never left any of you. I'm with you here." Sunmist placed her tail on Honeypaw's heart. "I have never left this place. Now go back and try to become the warrior I wished you to be."

"I will." They touched noses before Honeypaw's vision went to darkness. She blinked open her eyes and saw the familiar den. She stood up and stretched her muscles before heading out of the den.

Her mentor was finishing up morning patrols. Honeypaw waited for her to get done before making her way over.

"Hello, Honeypaw. I'm going out to hunt. You can stay in camp-like I promised you yesterday," Heatherheart said as she flicked her tail to Dustywind, Frostpaw, and Timberfang, who were waiting for the deputy to join them.

"I actually want to go. I've put some thought into my future and decided that I want to become a warrior soon rather than later," Honeypaw says as she plays with a leaf laying on the ground.

"That's great. I'm glad you've gotten over your grief to continue your usual activities. You can come with us. Frostpaw was wanting to see who could catch the most prey with you for a while, but you were lost in thought all the time."

Heatherheart led Honeypaw over to the patrol as they made their way out of the camp to see what prey was running around this morning.
