The sun shone through the entrance of the den. The birds sang in the distance. The scents throughout the den smelled of sweet milk.
Pinekit rose from his bed that he shared with his mother and his two littermates. He was the first one to wake up. He rubbed his eyes and quietly padded out of the den.
The warriors and apprentices were already working. The dawn patrol just returned from their hunt and every cat dragged in their own piece of prey.
Pinekit ran over to the patrol as he saw his friend pulling in a big squirrel.
"That's so big, Snowpaw! I want to catch something that big when I become an apprentice. I'm going to be the best warrior ever!" Pinekit meowed.
"You still have some moons before that will happen. For now, enjoy your time as a kit. Food gets handed to you," a red she-cat apprentice snickered from behind Snowpaw.
"Foxpaw, you could be a bit nicer. You were like that as a kit too," Snowpaw said.
"I was not. I didn't complain about it, I went out and made sure I was going to become a warrior."
"You also got caught and couldn't leave the nursery for a moon. Lilywhisker had to sit on you to make sure you wouldn't leave," Tawnypaw chimed in as she padded over to them.
"Like you can say anything. You don't even belong here. Why don't you go back to where you came from," Foxpaw hissed.
Tawnypaw's tail drooped down. Six moons ago, Ottersplash found Tawnypaw out by the river. She had to save her when she fell into the river. The clan didn't know where she came from. Everyone thinks her mother abandoned her. Some say she was a kittypet or a rouge. It was also possible for Tawnypaw's mother to be a loner or in another clan.
"Foxpaw you need to be nicer to your denmate." Pinekit turned around and saw Rownfrost come walking over to the group. Rowanfrost was Foxpaw's mentor, but also he was Pinekit's father. "Since you can't be nice I'll have you remove the ticks off the elders for the next three days until you can show respect for your clanmates."
Foxpaw tried to protest but was quickly shut up by Rowanfrost. She gave a small hiss over to them before walking off.
"Sometimes she needs to be nicer. She has an attitude sometimes," Rowanfrost says as he licks his paw. "I'm sorry for Foxpaw's actions. Tell me if anything else happens."
"Of course," Tawnypaw replied.
Rowanfrost looked over and saw the kit sitting there. "How's the training going?"
"I think I could be an apprentice right now. I've been practicing the moves you showed me yesterday. I have them down," Pinekit said as he lowers himself to the ground before leaping at a nearby leaf.
"Keep practicing and you'll be an apprentice in no time," Rowanfrost purred.
Two kits tumbled out of the nursery and came running over to them. They were Sandykit and Cloverkit, Pinekit's littermates.
"Why didn't you wake us up. We wanted to learn a battle moves too," Sandykit said.
"I just woke up. I didn't want to bother you two or Berrypool. Lilywhisker was also still asleep."
Lilywhisker was Foxpaw's mother. After Foxpaw became an apprentice, Lilywhisker announced that she was expecting more kits and stayed in the nursery while Foxpaw moved out to the apprentice's den, joining Snowpaw and Tawnypaw.
"Teach us something today," Cloverkit said as she jumped around Rowanfrost.
"Show me your hunter's crouch. It'll be very important for when you become apprentices."
The three kits lowered themselves down to the ground. Their belly fur barely brushing the ground.
"Sandykit, lower your tail a bit more and Cloverkit stop moving your tail. Pinekit you need to lower your back down." They all followed the warrior's feedback before he moved a leaf out in front of them.
"I want you to each jump out and try to land perfectly on this leaf without crushing it."
"But it is a leaf? How are we now going to crush it?" Cloverkit asked.
"Your jump should be perfect enough to make no sound when landing."
Sandykit was the first one who tried. She crouched down and prepared to leap. She flew in the air before coming down and smashing the leaf into millions of pieces.
"This is impossible," she complained.
"Not if you put your mind to it. It will take some practice. If you can do this before you become an apprentice then you'll make a very good warrior. You must have the patience to become a warrior. Don't give up too easily."
"Are you teaching them battle moves again? I told you they are too small for that," a beautiful she-cat says.
"Berrypool, they have to learn at some point," Rowanfrost says as he pads over to his mate and gives her a nuzzle.
"What are you teaching them today?"
"I'm having them practice not crushing the leaf when they land on it. They aren't doing so well yet."
"With you as their father, I'm sure they'll figure it out." The two purred and walked away with their tails twined together.
"Is this really possible? We've been trying it over and over again. Why can't I do it?" Sandykit protested.
Meanwhile, as they complained, Pinekit was off in his own world. I can do it. I'm the kit of Rowanfrost, one of the best warriors. I will do this and become the best warrior ever!
