"you looked at death in a tarot card
and saw what you had to do."

Long heads of golden seed rippled in steady waves around her. There's something about it, their movement so synchronised yet independent, their hues so close yet unique. And whilst they danced in the wind, came the soft hum of bees, the sweet chirps of birds and a chorus of crickets. The melody calmed her.

Content to be warmed by the gentle end-of-summer rays, Aurelia lay there up against an old, large oak tree. Blades of grass slightly poked into her sides but she didn't mind. This was her spot, tucked away in the cornfield in the centre of her district - district 9. It was the only place she could go to escape, the only place she felt completely safe. Not a single peacekeeper to bother her in sight.

It was calming, in amongst the danger that tormented her and the fear that hung over her shoulders. It almost made her forget, today was the reaping for the 67th annual Hunger Games.

She had blocked it out of her head, refused to give it a second thought. She knew no matter how much she cried about it and felt sorry for herself, it wouldn't change. There was no escaping this, she couldn't hide away in the field forever. It was just the way it was and nobody could do anything about it. She can only be strong now and pray that her or her brothers name wouldn't get picked.

Aurelia was only 16, however today her name would be in 33 times. Every year since you turn 12, your name is placed into the reaping bowl, so Aurelia's name would've only been in a few times if she hadn't signed up for tesserae for her and her family. She'd refused to allow her brother to sign up for any himself and risk his chances of being safe from the games, so she took it upon herself as the eldest sibling.

The sun blinded her as she looked into the sky, it was directly above her now, meaning she needed to get back for the reaping. Taking one last glance at her hideaway, she reluctantly began walking home to find her brother.

"From the treaty of treason: In penance for their uprising, each district shall offer up a male and a female between the ages of 12 and 18 at a public Reaping."

That word alone made the hairs along Aurelia's arm stand up.

"These tributes shall be delivered to the custody of the Capitol and then transferred to a public arena where they will fight to the death, until a lone victor remains."

Pure disgust could be seen plastered across her face in the crowd, she hated how they treated this as some kind of sport or entertainment for their own benefit.
