Maki Harukawa, the Ultimate Assassin...A survivor of the fifty third killing game...
It's been almost a year since the killing game ended...
She'd lost so many...
Even the first person she ever loved...
Kaito Momota.
She lay in bed, restless. Her nightmares had been getting worse.
"Maki, don't cry. Please." She could still hear his voice. She remembered holding his limp body after his execution failed, the virus had finally got to him.
"No!" She quickly sat up. She threw her blankets off of her and ran to the bathroom. She slammed her hands down on the sink. "No! No, no, no, no, no..." She turned on the tap and started splashing cold water on her face, she gripped the sink, panting. "C'mon, Maki, hold it together."
"Not now. Not now." She thought. She stumbled to the ground and placed her head between her legs and started crying. At first, it was just sniffles, then she started wheezing and her breath got shorter and shorter. "Get a grip." She ordered herself. She glanced up at her clock.
05:23
"Still early..." She said to herself. She decided that a walk would be best. She left her bedroom and headed for the porch. She grabbed her trench coat, buttoned it up and left her apartment. She walked the building, their was no one around. She glanced up at the-
"Stars..." She heard someone say. She took out her pocket knife and flipped it open.
"Who goes there?" There was no reply. She closed the knife and kept it in her hand. She saw no one. "You're imagining things Maki." She convinced herself.
She continued her walk. The assassin found a field and laid down in it, looking at the stars. There were no clocks around, so she couldn't tell what time it was. After what felt like hours, she returned home. The walk back felt like forever and it was freezing out. She wished that-
"No, stop thinking like that. He's gone whether you like it or not." When she finally arrived at her apartment, there was a note on the door.
February third, 01:00, back parking lot. Don't be late.
No name. No sign of who left it. She took a look around the hall, no trace of anyone. She took out her keys and walked back inside. She placed her jacket on the table, along with her keys and walked to the fridge. The young woman peeked at the clock. 06:11.
Her walk had been a little less than an hour. She poured herself a glass of water and walked to the couch. She flopped down and turned on the television.
CRASH.
There was a loud noise out in the hall. She quickly shut off the TV and stood up. She heard rustling and grunts. She approached the door after grabbing her hang gun. She looked through the peep hole and was surprised to find...
Shuichi Saihara.
She sighed and opened the door.
"What are you doing here, Shuichi?" She whispered screamed.
"Maki!" He stumbled. "Um, nuh, nothing."
"What was that crash?" She asked, crossing her arms and leaning against the door frame.
"Crash? What crash?" He looked around nervously and rubbed his hand over the back of his neck. He was avoiding making eye contact with her. In fact, he wasn't even looking at her.
"Um, Maki?" He asked quietly.
"Yes?" She replied.
"Can you go put something on over yourself?" He said.
"Pardon?" Surely she had heard him wrong. She was wrong. She glanced down and realized all she was wearing were pajama shorts and a bra. She blushed and excused herself to go back inside. She grabbed a random jacket from the hangar and went back outside.
He stared at her, in an odd way.
"What is it now, Shuichi?" She placed one hand on her hip. He met her gaze as she realized which coat she'd grabbed. His eyes were watering a bit.
"That's that's..." He said, in a quivering voice, he staggered back a bit.
"Yes, it is." It was Kaito's jacket. She pulled the jacket closer to her.
"Um, so..." Shuichi said.
"Yeah, so... What are you doing here at six in the morning?" Maki snapped.
"Just wanted to, um, surprise you..." He glanced around awkwardly.
"Why?" She crossed her arms.
"Do you... Not remember...?" He asked.
"Remember... What? Shuichi?" He took out a box from behind the bushes. "What is that?" Knowing Shuichi, it could be anything. The sun had begun to rise.
"You seriously don't know?" He picked up the box and walked towards her. He kept his head down, looking at the box. "It- it's your birthday..." She took a step back from the Detective.
"How do you know that...?" She breathed.
"You t-told me. A while ago..." He blushed.
"Surprise!" A voice sounded. Himiko jumped out from being the bushes.
"Himiko?!" Maki was so surprised. "You- you guys..." Her eyes started watering. "T-thank you." She hugged them tightly.
"Friends... I have real friends..." She said to herself. "Thank you... Kaito..."
"Happy Birthday, Maki Roll..."
