"Thestrals?" Sirius asked, scrunching up his nose.
"Never heard of them," Peter said, sat in an armchair in the common room.
"Sure she wasn't making it up to scare you?" James asked, earning a scoff from Lily Evans who sat beside the fire. "Something to say, Lilyflower?"
"Don't call me that. And thestrals are real. Really Remus, I thought you'd know."
Sirius smirked and nodded dramatically at Remus, "honestly, Moony, you are so intelligent. How ever did you not know?"
Remus laughed and shook his head at the boy.
"You'd have known what they were if you'd have come with me and the other Gryffindoor prefects," Lily said.
"What with dull Jones?" James laughed.
"Jones who needs Slytherins to stick up for him," Sirius muttered under his breath.
"What?" Lily asked.
"Nothing," Remus said quickly. "So, Romilly wasn't lying..."
Lily rolled her eyes, "why would she lie?"
"Dunno..."
"She's-" James started.
"If you say 'Slytherin' I swear to Merlin..."
"A death eater," Sirius finished, smiling sweetly.
"Bullshit," Lily scoffed.
"Come off it," Remus laughed. "I don't think she-"
"You saw her with Crouch!" Sirius exclaimed. "Even his own father hates him because he's a death eater!"
James nodded and pointed at Sirius saying, "true, true."
"What do you think, Pete?" Remus asked the boy, feeling sorry that he was being left out.
Peter jumped a little and stiffened, "oh... I... don't know..."
"Nothing to say on Romilly this time?" James grinned.
"I'm sure thestrals are real," he said quietly.
"They are," Lily added with an exasperated sigh.
"Why can she see them?" James asked Remus.
Before the boy could reply, Lily Evans had slammed her book shut and was huffing in the direction of James. "Really, Potter? Do you know nothing-"
"What?!" He exclaimed.
"Esmeralda Romilly."
"Who?"
Sirius laughed and slapped his hand on his friend's back, "her mum, you idiot."
"What- oh! I remember, she died. What about it, Lil?"
Lily rolled her eyes but answered regardless, "it was reported for weeks-"
"Why?"
"The 'circumstances' surrounding it," Remus said quietly.
"What are those then?"
"Well, obviously she knows," Sirius said. "Romilly, I mean."
"Mm," Lily said quietly.
"Apparently she was involved with a muggle," Sirius smirked.
"Classic," James laughed.
"Are you really laughing over someone's parents death?" Lily snapped, looking between the two boys and Remus, who appeared unbothered.
