[Max POV]
I laid there on my mattress staring forward, still curled in Billy's jacket. I looked up at the widow and saw a bit of light starting to shine through the duct tape, I looked down at the floor and stared at the loose splintered floor boards. It was probably best to get up and get ready. I sat up feeling a bit sore still, I looked over at my closet and saw I really didn't have anything to wear, I hadn't taken my dirty clothes to Dustin's yet, he usually does my laundry for me. I stood up with all my strength and walked over looking through a pile of neat folded shirts and chose a plain yellow one then changed into it, I had no clean pants so I kept on my jeans from yesterday. Suddenly I felt a bit of excitement flash through me. I remembered it was Halloween, this was only my second time celebrating it, I had a lot of fun with it last year, but what if it's going to be different now?
I threw on one of my sports jackets on then put Billy's jacket on over it. At least I had a few layers on now. I turned to my door and slowly opened it and peeked around the corner, Susan's bedroom door was closed so she must've been sleeping still. I slowly made my way out of the room and down the hallway watching out for any spots on the floor that could possibly make any kind of noise, I've done this for so
long that I had just about had every board memorized. When I got to the door I slowly pulled it open and scooted myself through the small crack I made then closed the door behind me. I felt a little relived once I was outside, but knowing that there weren't many safe places for me, that relief disappeared. I shrugged it off and turned off down the sidewalk beginning to head down to the street corner to wait for Eliza.-
As I walked to the bike racks with Eliza we heard a bunch of yelling, we looked over and saw the boys shouting and hugging each other in their Ghostbusters costumes. Eliza and I looked at each other then approached them as Mike and Lucas started arguing over something.
"What the hell is going on?!" Eliza asked
"I'm supposed to be Venkman!" Mike said.
"I'm pretty sure we agreed that I would be Venkman." Lucas said.
"Why can't you both just be Venkman?" Eliza asked.
"My question exactly." Will said
"Because I'm Venkman and he's Winston." Mike said
"I don't want to be Winston." Lucas said.
"Why not?"
"Because one, he's not funny, two, he's not cool, and three, he's not even a scientist!" This is really getting boring.
"He's cool."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Then why won't you be him?!"
"I can't!"
"Why not!?"
"Because...b-because-"
"B-B-Because you're not black!?"
"No! No. be-"
"Guys!" Dustin interrupted, we all turned and watched as everyone passed us and piled into the school, none of them were wearing costumes. Earlier Eliza and I felt weird because we didn't have ours on but now that we know other people didn't dress up we didn't feel as bad. But it was kinda odd, everyone did it last year. As we walked through the school the boys looked around with horror in their eyes, literally no one else dressed up but them. "I don't get it. Everyone dressed up last year."
"Who you gonna call!? The nerds!" Someone shouted.
"Why aren't you guys dressed up?" Dustin asked.
"Steve hasn't taken me to get a costume yet." Eliza said.
