A/n this is going to be earlier in time by a few months so Max will be starting school a week after everyone else in Hawkins.

August 17 1983, Max POV

       I laid on my incredibly uncomfortable mattress waiting for time to pass by, spending the last few moments I have in bed. It's not like I actually sleep so what exactly am I doing? I agreed with myself to just get up and get ready for school, I quietly shuffled through my room making sure not to trip or make any noise, my mother, who I refer to as Susan, gets pissed pretty easily and I wasn't in the mood for a beating. It was my first day going to my new school after moving away from California, god I miss it there, but what exactly am I missing? It's probably just going to be the same thing here, no friends, no sleep, no care, no fun, no nothing.

Eli POV

          I sat in class with my head hanging down and my arms crossed, oddly I felt pretty comfortable the way I was, comfortable enough to fall asleep, in which while I was contemplating it, I did. While dozing I heard my name being called, I felt something being thrown at me which startled me awake. I looked in the direction it came from making eye contact with my friend Lucas, I threw my hands in the air but he motioned to the front of the class.
"Eli, are you awake now?" Mr. Clarke asked
"Yessir." I answer back sitting myself up straight, I looked up to the front and saw a girl with fiery red hair standing there awkwardly.
"Now that we have everyone's attention." Mr. Clarke eyes me personally. "Class, may I introduce to you, all the way from sunny California, our latest passenger to join us on our curiosity voyage, Maxine!"
"It's Max" the girl snarked
"Oh?"
"No one ever calls me Maxine."
"Well then, all aboard Max."
           The girl rolled her eyes and walked back to the seat next to me. Oh shit! Shit shit shit, what do I do, is she mean? Is she rude? She looks pretty mean, come on Eli, you know better than this. The girl threw herself into her seat carelessly crossing her arms looking pissed as hell, she took a glance at me and I just smiled lightly, she looked me up and down and turned to the other side of her to see the party staring at her. She looked away quickly and I could tell she was uncomfortable. I look at the group and made eye contact with Lucas and then knew exactly what they were all thinking, it was about the stupid MadMax thing at the arcade. Well shit, this is going to be a long day.

Max POV

           I skated around during lunch time because I had nothing better to do, I couldn't help but notice the kids from my earlier class watching me, I was a little uncomfortable so I picked up my board and started walking up the back steps but was stopped by someone behind.
"Hey." A brunette girl said
"Hi?"
"Umm, are you the new girl?"
"No I'm just someone who popped up out of nowhere."
"Well geez, I just didn't know any other way to make conversation."
"Okay, fine, whatever, I'm sorry."
"Max, right?"
"Yeah, and you are?"
"Eliza or Eli or Liza or Liz or Lizzie...I could literally keep going, the name Elizabeth has a lot of different nicknames to it."
"Wow, do you get called every single one?"
"Yep, but just different people, like, my grandma calls me Elizabeth, my grandpa calls me Beth, my brother calls me Liza, my friends call me Eli, my dad calls me Liz, my mom calls me Eliza, my uncle calls me Lizzie...you probably don't care, anyways onto what I was going to originally say, I was wondering if you wanted to hang out or if you, like, want me to show you around the school or something."
"What about your creepy friends over there?" I cocked my head towards the group of boys behind the fence.
"Oh them, well sometimes it gets tiring hanging out with a bunch of boys, and it's nice to meet someone new."
"Cool, but the next time you talk to them can you tell them to stop watching me because it's, like, super freaky."
"Yeah sure, so umm do you want a tour?"
"Sure, why not."
           We walked inside the school, Eliza had showed me where most of my other classes were and actually helped me find my locker, before I had to carry my things to class and it wasn't all that fun.
"Hey, so do you want to come to the arcade with me and the party later today after school?"
"I mean if they stop watching me all the time, sure."
"Awesome, and I'll make sure they don't creep you out, but they're actually pretty cool."
"Alright."
"Anyways we gotta get to our classes so I'll see you later."
"Yeah, see ya."
