Chapter 19
Despite Raphael's suggestions, he was more than eager to help parade me around the mortal city for the next week. The first day and a bit, I was scared out of my wits. Like, on the verge of loosing my mind. But Raphael held my hand, and kept me close. And that helped a lot. (I wonder why?) By the third morning, I didn't even think about what I was doing, I was just excited to be spending the day seeing the sights with this gorgeous archangel I am living with!
Sometimes, as we wander through the bustling city, I would wish that I could do more than hold his hand. But the barrier that my gloves provide, to which I have taken to permantly wear, could only do so much. But of course, nothing like that can happen anyways. One time I turned to go the wrong way, and Raphael reached over to pull me back. His hand had gently latched onto my arm, and as I turned around all I could see was the excruciating pain in his face.
I had spent the entire time ordering random people around me, to find cold water and get ice (to which they looked at me strangely, yet help me out anyways. I think it was my genuine distress at the situation that made them help me. Although I will never really know.) Raphael, the poor thing, had to spend the entire time trying to convince me that his hand had stopped hurting.
But still, despite that little instant, the days have been more than enjoyable!
I even started to make friends with a few of the locals. Granted, they had been all children. And all homeless. But Alice had been introducing us to more and more of them. Raphael was very understanding, and was more than happy for me to make friends with them all. I couldn't help but feel as though they needed someone, not necessarily me, but someone who can look after them all.
On the evening of the end of the week, I was sitting in the alley of a rundown building, with about 40 children. Not all of them were homeless, but none of them had anywhere to go during the day, so they had all gathered here. Raphael was playing ball with some of the boys, while I was sitting with some girls and a few of the very young children, giggling and talking about toes. Yes. Toes. It was highly entertaining!
One of the children climbed over to sit on my lap. He was young, almost about 3 years old.
"What's your name?" I asked him. Alice, who was sitting beside me, smiled sadly.
"His name is Josh. But he doesn't talk. He never has."
"Oh. Do we know why?"
"Donno. He does understand us, a little. He has just never learnt."
"Does he have a home. Or does he stay with you, Alice?"
"There is an lady we normally take him and his two brothers too. But she is very old. We don't think we will be able to take them there much longer..."
"Well, where do you stay at night?"
"We get in trouble if the cops catch us. They think the best solution is to put us in the slammer. So he have to move to different places all the time. I like a place we found, down the street! It has a nice view. And the rats aren't too bad there!"
"That's good to hear Alice!" I laughed a little at her honest happiness at the place she had found.
But I knew that I needed to find them a better place to stay. Alice was walking us home, with a few of her friends, when I pulled up this idea to Raphael, quietly so the children won't here.
"Where can they go, though, Darci?" he whispered back to me.
"I have no idea! I just need to find them somewhere safe. Somewhere they can call home. Will you help me?"
"I will try. How about we deal with this Shadow first, and then try and help them?"
"We are going to leave you here!" Alice called from in front, interrupting our conversation. "Mrs Vine doesn't like us much!" and with that all the children scampered away.
Our place was only a few blocks away.
"Wow. Those kids don't hang around."
"I guess that is what happens when you realise people don't want you to be there." Raphael responded, as we made our way home.
"I know how that feels... Being around people who don't really want you there." It was literally only a few days ago when I was in Heaven and that definitely felt like it was the case. "I feel so sorry for them."
"I know." He told me, as we stepped through the doorway. "I promise. We will help them. Just, one problem at a time, okay?"
We stuck our head through the office window, in hopes to see Mrs Vine and let her know we were back, but she wasn't there. So, we walked around the side, and through the doorway to see if she was hidden.
Both Raphael and I saw her at the same moment. She was lying on the floor, as though she had suddenly dropped. Her eyes were rolled back and she was not moving.
"Noooo. Oh my God! Raphael!!! Is she... is she okay?" He was already over by her side. He was the archangel of healing. Surely he could help her!"
"I'm sorry Darci. She is no longer with us..."
" NOOO! She can't be Dead! Don't say that!"
I stood by the doorway, frozen. I wanted to leave, I wanted to ignore the sight before me, the lifeless body which just didn't look right. But I couldn't. Raphael was leaning over her, looking at her closely. And then he rose and looked at me, crying silently to myself. His kind eyes were full with sadness, and concern.
"Not only that, but Darci, she has just been killed by the Hermans Shadow."
