Chapter 13

Unlike previous meetings, this time I had been given a specific seat at the centre table.

My gut was a nervous wreck. I watched as more and more angels filled into the room, wings everywhere. This time there was a sense of urgency within the room: as though word had filled Heaven that there was a possible plan. Nobody needed to be reminded about the seriousness of the situation before them.

I tried to sit still and be patient. But the looks I was receiving as each angel entered the hall and noticed me sitting in the middle, made me stress more about my plan. What if they didn't take me seriously? What if they decided that me, mare human, shouldn't be allowed to do something like this?

Uriel sat on the other side of the table from me, scribbling notes down so fast, I swear it is physically impossible to do.  Michael and Azrael were standing in heated discussion, both evidently not liking each other's point of view. Gabriel was the only other archangel present at the moment, and she tried to include me into her conversation about the meaning of colour. I appreciated her efforts, but was unable to join her.

Raphael entered shortly after, with a flourish of his wings. Angels hurried quickly out of his way. When he saw me sitting here, his gorgeous face became confused. However, he quickly stepped over, sliding himself into the seat next to me. When he turned to ask me what was going on, I noticed that God was arriving and had to mouth a quick apology.

"Good morning all. Thank you for coming. I am sorry about the hour in which this meeting was called." Gods voice boomed around the now silent room, as he took a seat. "On the bases that this was organised by Michael, would you like to take it from here?"

Michael rose and looked around the room.

"Thank you my Lord. Upon discussion with a few others-" His eyes flickered over to me "- a suggestion was made as to how we could defeat the Herman's Shadow." An instant murmuring started, but for the first time ever, silence wasn't waited for before continuing. "As everyone is aware, the Shadow feeds on human memories. So if we were able to find a human with no memories, we should, in theory, be able to use this to trick the Shadow."

"Are you suggesting using a baby for the mission?" A voice called from the audience, and the instant disagreement was overwhelming. God rose up from his seat, indicating that everyone needed to settle down.

"I am sure that is not what is being suggested. I am correct in assuming this, am I not Michael?" He pointedly added at the end.

"Of course I'm not suggesting a child! That is absorbed! But we need someone whom will have the same affect."

Uriel stood up at this moment. My gut started to descend.

"We believe, that if we use Miss Darci here, whom has had her entire human existence whipped from her memory, we can gain an advantage over the Herman's Shadow, and use this advantage to defeat it."

Raphael froze beside me. There was lots of talking from around, but all I noticed was his face, as he turned to look at me, eyes wide with fear. I didn't know what to tell him. That I am willing to risk myself?

God was waving his hands, trying to silence all those around him. But they were beyond noticing him. After a while, his voice boomed out "SILENCE!!!" and that seemed to work the trick. Uriel hesitated, and then continued.

"Due to her history, she is by far our best advantage. My Holiness. What are your thoughts?"

God thought for a moment. I was still watching Raphael, who was unable to take his eyes from me. And then it clicked. I was able to recognise something within him. It was fear. The idea of me going to use myself as bait, brought fear to Raphael's heart. And realising that, my heart broke a little. But before I could say anything to the Archangel, God was speaking to us all again.

"It is a compelling concept, that has huge potential. Darci, my dear. What do you think of this suggestion?"

My eyes never left Raphael's terrified face, and I answered God's question.

"Actually, my Lord. It was my suggestion. I think it would be a good idea."

"No." Raphael suddenly moved, his eyes breaking away from me for the first time, as he stood up to face God. "I can not stand by and let you risk Darci's life like this."

"Raphael, you must see the advantages. We have little hope at the moment." Michael responded. Raphael turned to him.

"It is too dangerous! She is mortal! We can not put her in such a situation!"

"I will organised for her to be watched and protected. We'll keep her safe, brother." Michael added as a response to his interjection.

"Safe, until you hand her over to the Shadow, that is!" Raphael snapped back.

Raphael was still standing, arguing with his brother, unable to understand why they were letting me. I noticed how he did ever direct the questions to me, the accusations to me, and wondered why that was so.

"I think I can help. Shouldn't I at least try?" My question was directed to God, and he nodded.

There were more talking from around the room, and God seemed to take in all that was saying. I looked at the faces surrounding me, and noticed that there was a lot less of hate, and more of sympathy, almost a little respect. I wanted to help, and that was something they could ignore.

Finally, God came to a conclusion.

"This is an issue that cannot go unsolved. We need to do something to stop the Herman's Shadow, before it destroys the moral world. Darci here is allowing us an opportunity that we should accept, for it gives us a tremendous advantage, which is exactly what we have been searching so desperately for." He looked down at me, with a warm smile. "We are honoured that you are willing to give this a try, Darci. Thank you."

Raphael, who had eventually sat back down beside me, rose yet again. "My lord. If you are sending Darci into such a dangerous situation, I have to insist that you allow me to accompany her!"
