Chapter 6
The room was like a court room: a table in the middle, with rows and rows of chairs climbing up the walls on all surrounding sides. It was crowded with angels, filling up every available seat; their wings clearly evident. In fact, as I look around I can see that I am the only one without wings.
I looked from my seat in the third row from the front, noticing that it was high enough to watch the table below with ease.
There were 5 angels seated around that table. I recognised four of them. Raphael was in deep discussion with Michael. Azrael was flicking through documents, his beautiful face burrowed in steady concentration. Gabriel was passing notes and paper to another man, whom I had never met before. But the vibrant cool blue gleaming through the underneath layers of his wings, suggest that he would be another Archangel, like the others at the table.
I leaned over to the angel next to me. She was an elderly lady with a gentle simile and a pleasant face (but nothing in comparison to Raphaels, or even Gabriels).
"How many Archangels are there?"
"These are the five! How is it that you don't know that?" I shrugged. She looked down at me and noticed my lack of feathers. "You're human?"
"Yep."
"How did you get to be in our realm?"
"What do you mean? I've always been here." From the look on her face, she didn't seem to believe me. But she chose not to push that thought any more.
"So, what do you know about God's angels?"
"Basically nothing. My previous company wasn't much of a talker on that particular kind of topic."
"Well... Michael is the man with the Gold wings. As the Commander of the Army of God, he is the Lord's right hand man."
"God has an army?" The angel chuckled.
"Yes. God has an army. Now, the only female Archangel is Gabriel. She is God's personal messenger, and adviser in a sense. She is definitely seen as the 2nd highest ranking angel. A lovely lady, but she is known to voice her opinions and have things done her way." Again the angel chuckled, her wings rocking gently with the motion. But she continued none the less.
"Gabriel is speaking Uriel. Uriel is the most intelligent creature to every live. Very smart, and tremendously wise. He is known to be the guide of faith. That leads us to the man with the dark black wings as-"
"-Azrael."
"Exactly. He is the Archangel of death. A wonderful fellow, he assists with the grieving, giving support to those in need and helping humans to move on. He has seen a terrible number of atrocities, but it would be difficult to find another to match his gentle soul. That leaves us with Raphael."
She stopped for a moment and both our eyes drifted over to the furthest angel. My heart started to beat faster, as the Angel I was most eager to learn more about, became the topic. "Raphael is the healer. Very powerful, he has remarkable strength and control. Despite that, he rarely intervenes or gets involved unless directly requested."
At that note, the archangels all stopped moving and fell silent. Everyone within the room followed suit. The lady next to me smiled, but said no more.
There were footsteps, but I couldn't see their owner. I gasped suddenly, as I notices a figure start to appear next to the table. It was god. Initially, he seemed faded and washed out in colour. It was as thought someone was turning on the light in his little area, brighter and brighter. Slowly, his colour deepened, his form becoming stronger and then he was completely there, moving around the room to sit at the head of the table.
The room was silent within. Everyone was watching God's movements. I noticed the lines on his face. He was sad.
"I am regretfully calling this meeting together, especially at this hour, but this event can not go ignored. Herman's Shadow, after years of growing, has finally been able to form a body of its own"
There was an uncomfortable mummer around the room. Some groaned, others sighed: evidently, the news was not welcomed in a positive light.
"As of this time we know little about its manifested form." Uriel was the first to speak.
"It would be wise to find out these details before choosing a course of action, My lord"
"I will organise my best to scout and record details. We shall find out everything possible." Michael added, to which God nodded.
"Very well. Please organise that immediately. Time can not be wasted."
An Angel from across the room stood and God's attention feel onto him.
"A question if I may?" He asked.
"Of course."
"Is the Herman's shadow, by any chance, a creation of the devils? Must we look into all possible options?"
My heart pounded at Satan's name. This was my area of expertise. As murmuring started once again, I tried to search my memories for any mention of a plan like this. But something to this extend was not his style.
I rose, shakily, to my feet. I didn't know how I was meant to start this. One of the only times I have ever spoken directly to God, I had yelled at him to shut up.
"My lord?" His eyes widened when they looked in my direction. There were shuffling as everyone else's attention's snapped onto me, also. I gulped.
"I would definitely have heard of something if there was even a whisper. I'm sure it isn't him."
"Is it possible for him to have hidden this from you?" Gabriel asked.
"Possibly, but the chances would be very slim. And I know his kind of methods. This does not sound like him at all."
God nodded at me.
"I agree completely. This isn't the work of the devil."
The talking in the room around me was getting louder now. I noticed more than a few suspicious eyes glaring at me, but I focussed on not looking back at them.
"Well, it is decided then. Over the next very short while, we will research the Shadow's new from, gathering details. I will gather everyone for another meeting when this is complete, and we shall take the next step." God rose from his chair, looking at the angels surrounding him.
"This is something that every one of us must take action against. We can not allow this creature to roam free. It is our duty to keep every human safe; to protect those we care about so deeply."
At that he stood to leave the meeting and everyone gathered there things. But not me. Because at god's parting message, Raphael's eyes had fallen directly onto me.
And now I have forgotten how to breathe...
