Chapter 20

"It's getting too much. There is just too much death. We need to do something." I whispered to Raphael.  We were standing on the stairs as police and ambulance filled the room below us. Raphael was sitting next to me, rubbing the back of my hand slightly distracted. He had become a little upset the moment one of the ambulance officers had told us that Mrs Vine had died of a heart attack and there was nothing we could do. As an archangel of healing, he already knew that. Of course, I am pretty sure that upset him even more.

Suddenly he froze, and straightened up. "What's wrong? Is everything okay?" I gasped at his reaction.

"My brother is here!" he murmured quietly, before gently pulling me up the stairs.

When we unlocked the door to our room, we found Azrael pacing in circles within. He smiled at both of us, embracing his brother in a tight, yet brief, hug.

"Raphael. Are you well?"

"Quite well."

"Good. Good. And you, Darci?"

"Oh. Great thanks Azrael. Um... may I ask why you are here?"

"I am here to give my support to those in need. I will make my stop over very quick. I am sorry to do this, especially at a time like this! But may I have a word with my Brother Darci?"

"Sure! Not a problem."

Both men looked at me expectantly. Where they wanting me to get them something? Oh.

"Alone. Whatever." I rolled my eyes, and left the room. The moment I had shut the bedroom door, my ear was flat along it, trying to soak up the words emerging from the other room.

"Why is this taking so long? I don't like leaving my Darci in danger, Azrael." I felt an incredible urge to giggle when he said My Darci, but was able to hold myself together. Just.

"I know. There is too much activity here. The shadow knows what you are. Knows that we Angels are directly touching this mortal, keeping her safe. Our Lord fears that Mrs Vine's life was taken as a taunt. To show how close it can get to us all."

"Of course it can get close! We are sitting here like ducks! I don't like this! I need to get Darci out of here."

"I thought this is something she wanted to do!"

"She does. But it is dangerous! She doesn't understand how hazardous this really is." The deep voice of the man I loved seeped through the door. They trembled with raw emotions, and the very sounds cause goosbumps to run all over my skin.

"I think she just might, my brother. And you being so close to her, isn't allowing the chosen path to be taken."

"But she is danger-"

That was enough. I didn't need to hear any more. Azrael was so right. As much as Raphael made me feel safe and happy, staying here wasn't going to help anyone. All I was doing was failing at my plan, hence allowing more lives to be taken. I needed to break away. I needed to find a way to draw the shadow to me, without Raphael keeping me safe. And there was only one way to do such a thing.

Within a minute I was climbing over the window, a small bag on my back with some money inside. Climbing down the fire escape, I was on the street and heading towards the train station without realising I had actually thought of a final destination. Infact, it was only until I was speak to the tired attendant at the counter, did I realise that I had indeed thought of a final destination. The one place in the world that I knew held significant meaning to me.

"Where do you want to go?" the attendant's voice was that of a monotone. Clearly, they didn't care where I was going.

"Um. I don't actually know of the name..."

"Please find out the name, then come back to me for the ticket."

"Well... Maybe you could help me? A couple of years ago, there was some murders at a university campus. 17 people died?" The attendant's eyes widened.

"Yeah. I know if it. Southern Hill University. Infact, it's not too far from here. Have to catch the four-fifty train several stops, should stop you just outside."

I pulled out some money, sliding it under the glass. As my change was returned, along with my ticket, the attendant remembered a fact about the incident."

"Did you know that some girl was in the room of one of the victims? Rumour was that she only survived cause that creep went after her best friend first. Of course, the girl disappears a tad later, and no-one has seen her since."

"Oh? Fancy that." My heart was pounding. That girl is me!

"Poor thing. Bet the guy somehow caught up with her. Probably killed her too. I bet he put her through Hell."

"For some reason, Hell seems to be the exact thing I think she went through too..." I muttered as I left for my train.
