Chapter 8

Raphael had things to do, so he left me at his place. For an archangel, it was kinda small. Cosy in a way, probably how he likes it.

Despite absolutely nothing to do, the day went really fast. Time just slipped me by. Not like in a dream where five hours feels like it is 5 seconds, but where I can wander around aimlessly, and not notice the time.

Unfortunately, it meant that when Raphael did return, I had a few questions that needed to be voiced.

It was early afternoon when he popped back in. I smiled when he entered.

"Raphael."

"Darci." He smiled when he said my name. I took a deep breath, and tried to focus on my more important thoughts.

"How is everything? Have they found out any information about the Shaddow?"

"We are still trying to locate it. It must realise that we are searching, and for now it is keeping a low profile."

"Still building strength." He looked at me, a little bit surprised that I understood the theory so well.

"Exactly. Unfortunately, it means now is the perfect time to action."

I jumped up from the chair and walked toward the kitchen. As I moved closer to where he stood, I noticed him move out of my way, out of my reach.

"Can I ask you something, Raphael?"

"Yes..." he responded, however hesitatively.

"I wanted to ask you about what you just did." He looked at me strangely as I filled two glasses of water, and offered one to him, which he accepts.

"What do you mean?"

"Just then, why did you move away from me? Michael makes comments. Comments about how I am human. But I don't understand it. Does me being human hurt you?"

He took a long drink. And then sat his empty glass back down. He looked sad, as though this wasn't something he wanted to talk about much.

"Yes it does. Touching you, hurts us. Like, a burning rod digging into our skin..."

He sighed and went and sat on the couch. I hesitated, but then joined him, being careful to keep a distance between us.

"Do you know why?" I asked him.

He looked at the distance between us, and it seemed to hurt him more. I don't know why.

"This might surprise you Darci, but I have existed since the beginning of time itself. Do you really want to know why there is a barrier? Between angels and humans?"

"Yes. I do."

"It's simple. Because when humans pass away, they come here. If they can go home and visit their families, their loved ones whenever they wish, there would be essentially no life cycle. Their families would never be able to move on. Time would not be able to progress. I was there the day God decided to create the rule. In order for the world to move forward, Humans and Angels will be unable to physically interact."
